The Immunization Card

If your baby is born in a local Israeli hospital, you will immediately be given a Pinkas Hisunim – an immunization card where your child’s first and subsequent vaccinations will be recorded.  Make sure you keep this card in a safe place as your child will need it for future vaccination administered at school.

If your children were not born in Israel, they will be given an immunization card at their first visit to Tipat Halav or at school, according to their age.

Influenza Vaccine

Influenza vaccines, also known as flu shots or flu jabs, are vaccines that protect against infection by influenza viruses. The Israel Ministry of Health also recommends that the public receive an annual vaccination against influenza.  The vaccine is administered via the Health Fund – Kupat Holim.  Ask your family doctor for details.

Parents who choose not to vaccinate – understand the risks

If you choose not to vaccinate your child you should understand the risks. You need to know how to make it less likely that your child gets an infection or spreads disease to others. Infant and childhood vaccines prevent diseases that can be serious and even deadly.

Measles can cause brain swelling, which can lead to brain damage or death.

Mumps can cause permanent deafness.

Meningitis can also lead to permanent deafness or brain damage.

Polio can cause permanent paralysis.

Medical Tip

When sorting your documents prior to Aliyah, remember to bring all medical records with you and your child’s vaccination record from abroad.

Have Fun Learning Hebrew with Palindromes

A palindrome is a word, phrase, number, or other sequence of characters which reads the same backward or forward.  Words like ‘noon’, ‘civic’ and ‘radar’ or a phrase like ‘Madam, I’m Adam’ or ‘Was it a car or cat I saw’ are examples of palindromes.

The Hebrew language has them too.  Words and names like:

  • ישי – Yishai, David’s father
  • דוד – David, Yishai’s son (also  pronounced ‘dod’ an uncle)
  • נתן – Nathan or Natan, David’s son
  • ירי – Firing of a bullet
  • אבא – Father
  • מים – Water

And then sentences and phrases like these:-

ילד כותב בתוך דלי

Yeled kotev b’toch dli

A boy writes inside a bucket

הפוך על הפוך

Hafooch al hafooch

Up-side down logic

בחר בלב רחב

Bachar b’lev rachav

Choose with a big heart

There are very many more, but this is our final example

רבע הלילה עבר

Reva ha’leila avar

A quarter of the night has passed

How do you say these 5 words in Hebrew?

Did you ask your lawyer for a copy of your mother-in-law’s ‘neck’ rather than a copy of her ‘will‘?  Have you asked your pharmacist to recommend something for your kafkafim (sandals) instead of your kaskasim (dandruff)?

Here are a few more Hebrew words we often confuse and are worth learning:

Hebrew Transliteration English Meaning
צבע Tzavah He painted
צבא Tzava Army
צואר/צוואר Tzavar The neck
צואה Tzava Last will and testament
צבה Tzaveh Swollen or distended
