Israel’s recycling of electronic waste & batteries.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Tips & ideas for recycling electronic waste & batteries in Israel.

If your house is like mine and old electronics; chargers, keyboards, memory sticks and computers are taking over  – you need to know how to go about recycling electronic waste in Israel.  It was only when I recently decided to get rid of some stuff that I realized how much electronic waste we have accumulated over the last 30 years; old calculators, palm-pilots, endless telephones, old sound-systems, CDs and DVDs, and ear-phones and not to mention the cables – OMG!

Israel’s Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Batteries (or e-waste) Law requires manufacturers and importers to either treat their electronic and battery waste themselves, or work with companies accredited to treat them. Mobile and regular phones, pagers, audio equipment, camera equipment, computers and peripherals, TV sets, washing machines and refrigerators all fall into this category.

recycling electronic waste e waste

Why is e-waste harmful?

  1. Toxic materials can penetrate groundwater or are released into the atmosphere
  2. Contaminants can cause serious illnesses
  3. Burning e-waste can emit toxic waste

Batteries

Vendors of batteries are obligated to have a container in their shops so that the public can dispose and get rid of used batteries. Anyone can dispose of batteries in these containers – not just store customers.

These stores have an old battery collection facility: Nupharm, Superpharm, Pelephone, Cellcom, Partner, Shufersal, Office Depot, Home Center, Steimatzky,  Tzomet Sefarim and the Post Office, Lemetayel, Ricochet and Bezek Store

How to dispose of electronic waste

E-waste can be brought to the store from where it was purchased and you might even be offered a trade-in on your old product . Stores selling electronics are obligated to arrange for collection of e-waste for recycling.

List of e-waste drop-off points

Some municipalities advertise e-waste drop-off points on their websites, but some do not. We found this Click here for a map of electronic shops in Israel that collect electronic waste for recycling..

Practical tips for organizing your electronics

Time to organize your electronics.  Empty every drawer and cupboard of electronics and place them in a huge container.  Check all the items and separate those in working condition from those that are not. Drop-off the old electronics at a recycling point and organize those that you are left with.

  • Ali Express and similar websites, or even your local dollar shop, sell plastic containers and organizers with compartments that you can use for storing small items.  All working ear-candy can get stored in one of these.
  • Place empty, cardboard toilet-rolls in an old shoe box.  Each toilet-roll can house one cable.
  • Make holes in block of foam to store and protect memory sticks and flash drives.
  • Ikea’s FLORT remote control pocket can hold 4 remote controls.  It also has space for your tablet.
  • From between $3 – $20  on Ali Express, you can buy a selection of  portable, waterproof, electronic storage bags which can hold an assortment of small electronics – great for traveling.

The Hebrew month of Tammuz

Reading Time: 8 minutes

The Hebrew month of Tammuz or Tamuz, its energy and place in the zodiac.

Contributed by Rav Nissim Mordechai Makor

May this article be an Ilui Neshamah for Chaim ben Moshe Aharon HaLevi zt’l. Whose Yarzheit is on the 22nd Tammuz.

tammuz zodiacRemember, Astrology is not about telling the future, nobody can do that. By understanding the energy of each month, we are able to navigate smoothly through the month, because one cannot act the same way every month. Every month has a different energy and it helps to know what that specific energy is.

Tammuz is a very interesting month. On one hand it is considered one of the three negative months (Tammuz, Av and Tevet), and the 17th of the month is the day when the golden calf was offered – now a fast day. Yet if we look closer into this month, we will see there is an opportunity to reveal an incredible amount of light.

What does it mean, a ‘negative month’?

It does not mean that it is a bad month. What it means is that judgement controls during the three negative months instead of mercy. The attribute of judgement is more prevalent and direct in these months and therefore more tests).

Some background info… From Shavuot until the 17th of Tammuz is 39/40 days depending on when you start counting. During this time Moshe Rabeinu was in heaven receiving the Torah and Bnei Yisrael were at bottom of the mountain basking in the glory of Hashem.  During these 39 days there was the energy Mashiach and there was, bila hamavet lanetzach – no death, immortality.   Unfortunately the people miscalculated and some of the Erev Rav convinced the people that 40 days had already past and Moshe was not coming back. The people panicked and the result was the golden calf.

The thing to realize is that we had Mashiach for 39 days. If Bnei Yisrael would have waited another six hours for Moshe, this state of Mashiach would have become permanent. This is the incredible potential of energy in this month. We have to turn this negativity into positivity. How do we do this?  Chazal say that in the time of Mashiach, Tammuz will become a time of joy.  The main job in Tammuz and the first half of Av is to be happy. This month and the next, Av, are heavy, especially during the three weeks and the tendency is to get down on ourselves. We have to work very hard to stay happy. By doing this we will merit an easy month and be able to tap into this energy of immortality.

The month of Tammuz is controlled by the moon and the next month, Av, is controlled by the sun. These two months are the only ones in the zodiac that are not controlled by one of the five planets we use. We can learn a lot from the moon. The moon is always connected to the Jewish people. The moon starts off small at the beginning of the month and grows to full by the middle of the month and then starts to shrink again. This month is all about renewal and starting over. There is ALWAYS another chance with Hashem. The moon gives us the energy to change and renew ourselves.

Shlomo HaMelech – King Solomon – said there is nothing new under the sun. However, he didn’t say anything about above the sun. The sun represents nature. It rises every morning. It doesn’t change like the moon. The Jews are above the sun, above nature. We are able to rise above our nature (the sun) and bring miracles into our lives.

As I said, the tikkun for people who are born in Tammuz is to stay happy. They are very sensitive and can sometimes be insecure, yet this is their work. Like the symbol for this month, the crab, which has a hard shell around it, so to people born in this month, build a wall around their hearts thinking that they will not get hurt. Unfortunately this wall does not protect them from suffering.  Also, the crab cannot walk forward or backwards, it can only walk sideways. There is no continuity. Crabs lack balance and this is what we have to strive for in this month. Tammuz is also a good month for business and people born in this month can be very good business people.

The letters of the month are Chet and Taf and the line of the Ana Becoach is the last line, which is Malchut.  Is it no coincidence that the name of this month is the same as the dreaded disease?

There is an old saying; The road to Hell is paved with good intentions.”

We have all heard this saying, but what does it mean?

Many times we make promises to do some good deed; give charity, feed the homeless, but don’t follow through. The day after you had the idea, the original enthusiasm is gone and the task just seems too big. In the Upper Worlds, time and space don’t exist, therefore when you decide to do a good deed in your mind (which is the spiritual world) it is as if it is already done. As it is already done, you then get the reward for it. Unfortunately this physical world is not like the spiritual world in that the thought is only the potential. The manifestation happens only when we actually do the deed. This is the beautiful paradox about life.

In science, there is a theory called the “Footprint Theory”. With this theory, for example, if someone decides to walk on the beach tomorrow, at that instant his footprints are already on the beach. All he has to do is get up the next morning, go down to the beach and not make the footprints, but put his feet in the footprints that are ALREADY there.

The Zohar tells us that if a person has good intentions but fails to enact them, the positive energy of their promises becomes a negative force which will manifest itself in one way or another.

Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai’s system of Jewish law centers on a person’s thoughts (“a deed is judged by the thought behind it”), or its inherent quality (as opposed to its outer, visible aspect).  He therefore exempted from punishment any violation of Shabbat and financial damages that were unintentional. He considered a person’s thoughts and inner self as the main thing in a person’s life, and many of his opinions, rulings and instructions reflect his system of thought.

Remember, energy/light cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be transformed. If we fall short of our promises, we create a lack, a packet of negative energy, a cancer. As the Zohar said, this negative packet of energy WILL manifest itself somehow.  Therefore, when we decide to do something we should be very careful to carry out our promises. A way to avoid this problem is to say, “bli neder” after you say you will do something.

The Ben Ish Chai says that the important thing is that the words of a person regarding holiness are not the same as his speech regarding mundane items. A person must consider very carefully what he undertakes to do regarding Holy matters and not to produce words from his mouth and make empty promises before Hashem. The biggest example of this is the promises we make to give charity. Many times people buy aliyot in Shul and forget about them or a meshulach comes to their door and they promise to send money. Also we promise to help a friend and forget about it.

This is a big secret!!! Please use it.

There is a Midrash which remarks that the spies’ mission failed specifically because it occurred during the time of the grape harvest. Ref: Bamidbar/Numbers 13:20. Moshe urged the spies to be strong reassured the spies that they have nothing to fear as Hashem would protect them.  What does this all mean? What does the grape harvest have to do with the failure of the spies.   Rabbi Shimshon of Ostropoli, explains that there are two periods during the year when the Satan possesses special power. The first is during the month of Tevet during the middle of winter, and the second period is the opposite end of the calendar, the months of Tammuz and Av, the summer months. These periods are vulnerable to spiritual damage. This is a time when Satan has more power to entrap people. It is no coincidence that the greatest tragedies in Jewish history occurred during these two months.

Rabbi Shimshon explains that the spies fell prey to the Satan because they embarked on their mission during the time when Satan is strongest. The period of the grape harvest occurred during the “dark” summer days, when Satan is at the height of his strength. The question remains, why is Satan associated with grapes? The Satan intoxicates like wine. Alcohol dulls our senses and prevents us from seeing things clearly. And that is exactly what the Satan does; it intoxicates our senses, preventing us from seeing things the right way.

In our day and age, these two months are the vacation season. A laid back attitude prevails and normal frum people, drastically lower their standards towards religious observance. Things that they would normally not do, become acceptable because it is the “vacation season.

The next question we need to ask is how did Yehoshua and Kalev avoid Satan’s trap. What was their secret?

Two things. Prayer and connecting to the Tzadikkim. Moshe prayed for Yohoshua and Kalev went to Hebron to pray at the tomb of Avraham.  We need to draw strength and inspiration from Yehoshua and Kalev and strengthen our commitment to follow the ways of Hashem during these two months. It is no coincidence that Parashat Shelach, the story of the spies, is always read every year just before the summer.  Summertime is Satan’s dream come true, and it is no coincidence. Don’t fall into his trap.

The next two months, Tammuz and Av, which is the hardest time of the year, are also the end of the year. Elul is connected to the new year, so Tammuz an Av are actually the end of the year. There is a Midrash that says that after Tu B’Av, when most of the negativity finishes, Heaven starts to set up chairs in the upper courts, getting ready for the new year.

The is a law that everything goes after the end. The Yetzer Hara is waiting for these two months of judgement. A person could have had a great year, yet if he slips in these months, the whole year can go up in smoke. BE CAREFUL, the Yetzer Hara is watching you.

The Zohar says the heat of summer is the heat of Geihinon (Hell). The Zohar explains that in these two months, the spiritual ozone protection is removed and therefore judgement is more prevalent. The Yetzer Hara uses this energy to create situations where we fall in our spiritual work. Remember the whole year depends on these two months. Be careful not to get angry in these two months.

Everyone has the exact same challenges as people born in this month. Don’t get sure of yourself and say that this does not apply to you because you are not born in this month. As with any challenge, the main thing is to just put our heads down and do the physical work, so that we can make our thoughts become a reality. Don’t let your dreams get filed away in your mind. Take action now, be happy and I promise you Hashem will grant you a good month. Be Happy. Smile.

Chodesh Tov.

Parking for the disabled & handicapped in Israel in a nutshell.

Hebrew: תג חניה לנכה

The Vehicle Licensing Bureau (Misrad HaRishui) issues disabled parking permits in Israel.

  1. People with disabilities may receive a disabled and handicapped parking permit for two vehicles provided that both of them are used by the applicant
  2. Only one of the vehicles is eligible for a reduced license fee (of only 27 NIS)
  3. Vehicles with disabled parking permits may park in areas designated for the disabled and in places where parking is not normally permitted, when certain conditions established by the Handicapped Parking Law are met; primarily that traffic is not disturbed.
  4. In many cases, vehicles with disabled parking permits may park for free on sidewalks marked in blue and white. This is not a national regulation, the specifics should be checked with each local authority. (For example, according to the Haifa, Tel Aviv and Beersheva call centers, this is the case)
  5. A vehicle with a disabled parking tag featuring the symbol of a wheelchair may drive in the lane designated for public transportation as long as the person with disabilities is in the vehicle.
  6. When parking, the permit must be placed on the left front window of the vehicle or the driver’s side window such that it can be seen clearly.
  7. Beginning in March 2019, a parking permit that is given permanently is valid for the person’s entire life (and is not renewed every 8 years).
  8. Beginning 15.04.2018,  parking permit tags are issued without the license numbers of the vehicles (vehicle details are listed in the Transportation Authority).

Types of Permits

  • Three types of permits are issued to those who are eligible:
    1. A blue badge with the symbol of a wheelchair – for the handicapped requiring a wheelchair or vehicle traffic due to their limited mobility.
    2. A tag with a green triangle symbol – for those who are disabled but not confined to a wheelchair.
    3. Both types (the blue wheelchair icon and the green icon) that has a flower on it – for disabled IDF veterans.
  • The disabled parking law makes no distinction between the different types of tags.
  • According to section 71a-1 Traffic Ordinance (New Version) vehicles with a wheelchair symbol may travel in the lane for public transport when the person with a disability is in the vehicle.

Eligibility

  • A request for a disabled parking permit can be submitted by someone suffering from an illness, or several illnesses that make walking difficult, someone for whom movement is dangerous to his/her health, or someone who is home-bound. The request is based on the most updated medical reports.
  • According to section 1 of disabled parking law holders of a Certificate of Blindness/Visual Impairment are eligible for a disabled parking permit, or with confirmation from a qualifying doctor that they meet on of the following conditions:
    • Individuals for whom medical disability has been established as at least 60% and for whom mobility without a vehicle is liable to negatively impact his/her health
    • Individuals with limited walking capabilities who require a wheelchair for mobility purposes
    • Individuals with disabilities in need of a vehicle as a means of transportation because of disability in their legs
    • IDF disabled veterans – with the approval from the Ministry of Defense
    • Blind individuals – with approval from the Ministry of Social Affairs and Social Services
    • Victims of hostile acts – with approval from the National Insurance Institute (Hostile Actions Casualties Department) that they are disabled and that mobility without a vehicle is liable to be hazardous to their health

For more information about the medical criteria for disabled parking permit eligibility, see the Ministry of Transport and Road Safety website

How to obtain a disabled parking tag

You must have all of the following documentation when requesting a disabled parking permit:

  1. Disabled vehicle permit request and vehicle registration exemption form
  2. Photocopy of identification card (teudat zehut) + attachment (sefach)
  3. Photocopy of vehicle registrations
  4. A letter signed by the applicant indicating the number of tags requested (up to two vehicles)

NOTE: Your disabled handicapped parking permit from abroad will NOT be recognized in Israel.  Only an Israeli permit is valid in Israel and using anything else will result in a hefty fine. If you have used your permit from abroad here in Israel, and gotten away with it, then you can consider yourself lucky!

Work on the infrastructure to extend Jerusalem’s light rail has commenced.  Once the work is completed, it is expected to reduce bottle-necks and traffic jams and shorten trips by as much as 20 minutes during rush hour.

Drivers to Jerusalem in private vehicles will have to seek alternate routes but public transportation will continue to function as normal.

  • As a result of the closure, traffic on Shazar Street to the International Convention Center will be closed to private vehicles.  An alternative route will open that will pass through Herzl Boulevard and go around the government offices on its way to the city center.
  • Private vehicles will be able to enter the Jerusalem via Route 443 or Route 1 through the Arazim Tunnel.
  • Those exiting the city will be able to travel via Begin Road to the Arazim tunnel or Route 443

Changes to the public transportation system will be made during the construction period. The location of bus lines and stations may change.  The public will be updated and changes will be announced via the media.

The Hebrew month of Sivan

Reading Time: 6 minutes

The Hebrew month of Sivan aligns with Gemini.

hebrew month sivan geminiRemember, Astrology is not about telling the future, nobody can do that. By understanding the energy of each month, we are able to navigate smoothly through the month, because one cannot act the same way every month. Every month has a different energy and it helps to know what that specific energy is.  The Hebrew month of Sivan has its own special energy.

Sivan is a very special month because the Torah was given in this month. The whole reason Hashem created the world was for the Torah to be revealed. Mount Sinai was that pinnacle of creation.
We know that every month has a different energy. For instance, Nissan has the energy of going out of bondage, while Iyar has the energy of the Omer, purifying ourselves for Mount Sinai and Sivan has the energy of immortality. There is no lack in the month of Sivan. We must also realize that for 39 days after the giving of the Torah, until the golden calf, there was exactly that same energy as the day the Torah was given.
One question we need to ask is what actually happened at Mount Sinai?
Yes, we did receive the Ten Commandments and the Torah. We heard the Voice of Hashem but how did it effect our lives? The biggest thing that happened at Mount Sinai was that there was suddenly immortality. When the Children of Israel said, “we will do and we will listen”, Hashem said to the angels, “Who taught my children the secret of the angels”, Shabbos 88a. At that point Hashem sent 1.2 million angels to protect the Children of Israel. There were 600,000 men between the ages of 20-60 and they represented the whole nation. There were two angels for each person and they formed a kind of halo over their heads. At that moment the angel of death lost his power and immortality reigned. Everybody was healed of every ailment. The people had just come out of slavery and were a beaten up nation, no arms, blind and many other problems. Suddenly everybody was 20 years old again and all ailments were healed. Imagine seeing your arm grow back. Women who couldn’t fall pregnant suddenly became pregnant. We had reached the level of Adam HaRishon before the sin. THIS is what happened at Mount Sinai. Think about this for a minute? Bila Hamavet LaNetzach, no death, immortality.

This is the energy of the Hebrew month of Sivan!!

As mentioned, when the Children of Israel said, “we will do and we will see”, Hashem said to the angels who taught them that secret. What is this big secret? The secret is that when an angel gets a job from Hashem, it does not ask questions. It just goes and does it. On the other hand, humans want all the details before they commit to something. If we want to tap into this energy of immortality, we have to become like the angels, just follow the Torah and don’t question Hashem. Surely Hashem knows what He is doing. This is the hard part, to have blind faith. Make a commitment this month to change some character trait that you have wanted to for a long time and Hashem will surely help you have a good month, no, a great month.
The Zodiac has twelve signs and these twelve are broken down into four groups, water, fire, air and earth. There are three signs in each group and these three represent right, left and central in each group. In Judaism we refer to these three as Chessed/Avraham, Gevurah/Yitzchak and Tiferet/Yaacov. The physical world is also made up of the a three column system. In an atom you have the proton, electron and neutron.
Teumim (also the Hebrew word for twins)/Gemini is an air sign and the central sign of the air signs, thus being the center of centrality. Everything about this month is central. Central represents balance and Gemini’s have the ability to reconcile two diametrically opposing concepts, to unify the right with the left and bring balance to a situation. The sign of Gemini, whose symbol is twins, is the duality found in the personality of people born in this month. On one hand they are very intelligent and incredibly quick and on the other they usually only get a superficial knowledge of things but think they have an answer for everything. Their tikkun/correction is to focus on the facts and follow through. They have to persevere.
The letters of the month are Reish and Zayin. Reish created the planet Mercury and Zayin created the astrological sign of Teumim/Gemini, ref. Sefer Yetzirah. The numerology of these two letters is 200 for Reish and 7 for Zayin. 207 is the same numerology as ein sof/endless world and Ohr/light and the Reish and Zayin make up the Aramaic word Raz which means secret, alluding to the secrets in this month. What is this secret?
In this physical world there are many things that science has proved to be true but people either don’t believe them or even if they believe them they don’t internalize them and live them. For example, science has proved that this physical world is made up of 99.99% air and that all matter is ultimately an illusion, yet how many people live this. They think their fancy new car or house is real and sometimes even treat them idols.
The Zohar says that Raz is a much deeper concept about a secret than a regular secret. What does this mean?
A regular secret is when somebody tells somebody else some information about a person or something, and tells them not to tell anybody else.  It is just between two people. A Raz is an open piece of information that everybody knows, but nobody follows. For example, this idea about the physical world being an illusion. The Zohar talked about this 2000 years ago. It states that the real world is the spiritual world and there is a curtain that separates the physical and spiritual worlds. Even though we live in the physical world, we have to connect to the spiritual world. How do we do this?
In spirituality, the first law is, cause and effect. This law states that change can only be made at the cause level. When one gets to the effect, it is already too late. The mind connects us to the spiritual world and our thoughts are what determines the outcome. The head connects to the highest Sefirah, Keter.
Chazal says: “The thoughts behind a sin is worse than the sin itself.”
This is a very deep subject, but what you have to realize is that physicality is a con. In this month, with these letters Reish and Zayin and Shavuot, we have the ability to go above physicality and connect directly to the spiritual. When we do this, we can change character traits at the root level.
This number, 207, is a very powerful number.
The line from the Ana Becoach is the sixth line, which has to do with our times(sixth millennium). There is also a deep secret to this line. It deals with how the angels do their jobs. They run with happiness to fulfill the Will of Hashem. This is also in line with what I said earlier about Hashem asking the angels who taught us their secret. Take this point to heart. It will help you a lot. The Ramchal says that alacrity, quickness to do things, is one of the best character traits to acquire. Why?  In his book, The Path of the Just, the Ramchal states that the possession of this trait of Zeal(alacrity) constitutes an extremely high level of spiritual development. A persons nature prevents him from attaining this because the physical world is controlled by gravity which pulls us down. In this month, with this line of the Ana Becoach, we can get the strength to overcome our nature and run to do Mitzvot.
The ruling planet this month is Kochav/Mercury. Mercury is the closet planet to the sun and it takes only 84 days to go around the sun, approximately a quarter the time it takes the earth to go around the sun. It is also the planet of communications. Mercury or quicksilver, is extremely sensitive to temperature variations and consequently reacts very quickly to them. The same goes for people born in this month, they react very quickly. Because Mercury is the closest to the sun it has the greatest affinity to the sun, signifying no lack and Mount Sinai proves this.
We also have two big Yortzheit’s/death anniversary’s on the holiday of Shavuot. David Hamelech is on the first day of Shavuot and the Baal Shem Tov is on the second day of the holiday. On these days we are able to connect to the Tzadik and draw koach/strength from them. It is advised to read the book of Tehilim/Psalms  or as much as you can on Shavuot to connect to David Hamelech. When we read Tehilim we connect to the great world which is called “Tehillah.” There is only holiness and compassion in this place.
Reading Tehilim is a big deal!!!
We have to realize that people born in this month have these qualities and challenges this month, but everybody has these challenges this month. We all live through this month. By knowing the strengths and weaknesses of a month, we can act accordingly and have a better month. To act the same every month is like having the lottery numbers and not using them. Take control of the month. Tap into this awesome energy and bring immortality into your life, healing the parts  of your life that needs healing.
THIS IS A SECRET!!!!!
