Israel Road & Traffic Signs

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Must-know these Israel road & traffic signs!

Hebrew: רשימת תמרורים בישראל

There are 255 road signs and 87 road markings in Israel.  Here is a selection of road-signs, traffic-signs and road markings you need to know. Let’s be better and more responsible drivers.

Warning Signs

Road signs giving orders

With the exception the except of the “STOP” sign (an octagon) and the “yield” sign (a downward pointing triangle), road signs that give orders are circular.

Prohibitory signs

Prohibitory road signs take the form of a black-on-white symbol inside a red bordered circle.  Sometimes a red slash covers the black symbol as shown here in the “No left turn” sign.

Mandatory Road Signs

Mandatory road signs bear a white symbol on a blue disc.  Mandatory road signs can be dark blue or turquoise like the two examples shown below.

Information signs

Signs giving information are generally rectangular (sometimes pointed at one end as in the case of a direction sign).

Highways in Israel are classified as national and they bear a single digit number like Highway 1, shown below.

Intercity city road signs have 2 digits, regional roads have 3 digits and local roads have 4 digits.

Each of these information signs is a different color – blue for national, red for inter-city, green for regional and black for local.

Directional Road Signs

Most directional signs to towns and cities are white-on-blue (motorways), white-on-green (main roads, black-on-white (local destinations), or white-on-brown (tourist destinations; landmarks, historical sites, nature parks etc.)

Street Information Signs

Street-name signs have black lettering (with Hebrew, Arabic & English) on a white background.  The street numbers are displayed in a red triangle.

Parking Signs

The sign for permitted parking in Israel, features the letter “P” – white-on-blue.  The Hebrew letter “Chet” (ח) for the word “chaniya” which means ‘parking’.

Parking Rules & Regulations in Israel

Paying your Parking Fine

Should you receive a parking fine, it will be left on the front windscreen of your car, under the windscreen wipers. You will also receive a copy of the fine by mail, sent to your registered address.

You have 90 days, from the date of issue, to pay a fine.

Queries & Cancellation

If you feel the parking fine is unjust, or you can prove that you did not contravene Israeli parking regulations, or you can prove a medical or other emergency, via documentation or an affidavit, you can submit this to the parking department of your municipality or regional council.  Should they feel you have valid cause, they might cancel the fine.  If they do cancel it, you will receive written notification in the mail.

Court Hearing

You can request a court hearing if you feel that your fine was unjust.  There is space on the flip side of the fine (that was sent to you in the mail) where you must fill in necessary details and send it to the stipulated address.

Reminders & Late Fees

Should you not pay your fine on time, a reminder will be sent to you by mail.  Should you not pay this either, you will be sent an additional request for payment, however the amount of the fine will now include an additional late payment fee.  If you continue to avoid payment, you could risk having your bank account attached by the court bailiff (Heb: Hotzaa LePoal)

Where to Pay?

You can pay your fine at any branch of the post-office, at your nearest bank or by calling the parking department in your area and providing your credit card details.  Before you do that, check your local municipality for an online payment option.

Living in Netanya

Aliyah & Living in the City of Netanya

Hebrew: עליה ומגורים בעיריית נתניה

Netanya Beach Front (Image credit: Netanya Municipality)

Are you considering living in Netanya? Netanya is located in the northern part of the Central District in Israel, in the plain of the Sharon.  The name Netanya means “gift of G-d”.   With easy access to the main railway and an extensive bus service, Netanya is an ideal choice for people willing to do a half-hour commute to Tel Aviv in the south, and a similar commute to Haifa, in the north.

Population

Nearly 200,000 residents call Netanya home. Netanya is popular among immigrants from France, the Former Soviet Union (FSU), Ethiopia, Persia (Iran), the English speaking countries and South America. In fact, about 1/3 of Netanya’s residents are immigrants.

Economy, Industry & Employment

Industry in Netanya is largely divided between four industrial parks – hi-tech and tourism play a major part in Netanya’s economy and offer numerous employment opportunities.  There are also many employment opportunities in the various academic institutions, the hospital and of course at Ikea which operates a very popular store in the area.  Netanya’s small and medium business, shops and shopping malls all offer a wide selection of jobs and employment as well as for English speakers.

Transport & Accessibility

Buses, railway and sheruts (shared taxis) connect Netanya with other parts of the country.  Two train stations; Netanya station and Bet Yehoshua station operate direct trains to Tel Aviv, Binyamina, Hadera, Herzliya, Lod, Rehovot, Ashdod, Ashkelon and other towns.  All Israel Railways stations, including Ben Gurion Airport, can be accessed from Netanya via transfer stations such as Binyamina and Tel Aviv.

Housing

You can choose to rent or buy an apartment, cottage or villa.  Depending on the location, the starting purchase price for a new 4 roomed apartment (3 bedrooms) is around 1.2 million shekels. Rentals average at 3,000 shekels for a two bed-roomed apartment and can fetch up to 5,000 shekels per month for a four bed-roomed apartment.  You can expect to pay at least 3 million shekels for a cottage and obviously, even more for a villa.

Popular suburbs include the Nitza and South Beach areas which are especially popular among English speaking seniors. Kiryat HaSharon and Ramat Poleg are also popular choices.

Education

186 kindergartens, 46 elementary schools, and 16 high schools are controlled by the municipality’s education department with a large selection of secular schools as well as schools for the Dati Leumi community.  Bet Yaakov and Chabad also have education facilities.

Higher education in various fields is offered at The Netanya Academic College, The Ort Hermelin College of Engineering, the Zinman College of Physical Education and Sport Sciences, Lesley College, and The Tesler School for Nursing. Also The Wingate Institute, Israel’s National Center for Physical Education and Sport are located in and around the city of Netanya.

Medical & Health

All four of Israel’s health-funds: Maccabi, Clalit, Meuhedet and Leumit are represented and have branches and clinics in the city.  The Laniado Hospital serves almost half a million people residing in the Netanya, Sharon region and its surrounding settlements.  The Tesler School for Nursing is affiliated to the Laniado Hospital.

Religious Life

Around 200 synagogues of all sizes and all affiliations; Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Orthodox, Ultra-Orthodox, Reform etc.  You are bound to find a shul with a mix of people and a level of observance you feel comfortable with.

Learning Hebrew

Tickets & Fares

The Metronit ticket uses the Rav Kav ticketing system. When purchasing a ticket with a Rav Kav, your Metronit ticket is validated for 90 minutes and within this time frame you can travel back and forth on the same ticket either on the Metronit or Egged bus or with other transport operators that have opted into the Rav Kav arrangement (not the railway service).

You can load your Rav Kav to the value of NIS 30, NIS 50, NIS 100, NIS 150 and NIS 200 – known as a “Stored Value’. The Stored Value arrangement can be used for any ride you need to make throughout the Haifa Metropolitan Area and it allows free travel and transfer for 90 minutes on the Metronit, bus and Carmelit.

You can also purchase a monthly Haifa season ticket (213NIS) which allows you unlimited rides on buses, Metronit, Carmelit and the new Rachbalit (cable car from Merkazit Hamifratz – Technion – University of Haifa.

Buying your Metronit ticket online

Using your personalized Rav Kav (i.e. not the anonymous one which does not have your identifying photograph) you can load your Rav Kav ticket online, using your credit card.

Once you have made your purchase, you will get a confirmation. You must then proceed to your nearest Metronit station. Swipe the card through the machine to validate it.

While purchasing online is a very convenient option, please note that the website instructions are only in Hebrew.

Paying via an app

If you do not use the public transport system regularly, or do not wish to lay out money for a monthly season ticket or large stored value, then paying with one of the new transport apps is really convenient.  Simply, download an appropriate app (try HopOn RavPass, The Station or Moovit from the iStore or Playstore) and insert your credit card details. Upon boarding the bus, use the app to scan the QR code which is prominently displayed in the bus, and then select the required parameters.  Once you have validated the details, your credit card will be charged accordingly.  At the end of the month, you’ll receive a receipt by email.

The Rav Kav (Multiple Ticketing System)

rav kavThe Rav Kav is a pre-paid magnetic card introduced about 10 years ago to simplify multiple rides and to replace season tickets. It can be used on all routes and transport systems operating in cooperation with Metropoline.

Your first-time Rav Kav purchase can be made at central bus stations, train stations and some shopping malls.

When you purchase your Rav Kav for the first time, you need to have your teudat zehut (identity card) or some other identity document with you (that has a photograph). Once you have loaded your Rav Kav for the first time, you can use it on the bus or on the Metronit. You can also re-load your Rav Kav at any one the Metronit stops which all have a ticketing machine.

Your Rav Kav ride is valid for 90 minutes and you can enjoy multiple rides, during that time, for the cost of a single fare.

  • Pensioners, students, soldiers and the visually impaired are entitled to discounted rates

There are 5 zones in the greater Haifa Metronit transport system and ticket prices vary according to zone

  • The basic single fare for the Krayot zone is 5.50 ILS
  • The basic single fare for the Haifa zone 5.90 ILS
  • The basic single fare for the Rechasim, Yagur, Kfar Hasidim zone is 5.50 ILS.  The basic single fare for the Hoterim, Atlit and Neve Yam zone is 5.50 ILS

Israel’s Olive Oil Industry – Consumer Report

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Olive “Oy”l – A report on the Israel olive oil industry.

olive oil

By popular demand we are re-publishing this report:

For those who do not understand Hebrew well, or missed the broadcast, the Channel 10 TV program Kolbotek on 24th April, 2013 reported their investigations of the olive oil industry in Israel.

They broadcasted their findings as follows:

Some oils, being sold as Olive oil, are actually blends of Soya and Canola oil.

Olive oil that is meant for use in the cosmetics industry, is NOT fit for human consumption and is being passed of as high-quality edible olive oil and is being sold in supermarkets.

When you buy olive oil make sure it has a quality control seal of approval.

Local products were sent to a laboratory in Italy for testing. These are the results:

The following products , manufactured by 2 companies: Evo & Hosen. are NOT fit for human consumption:

  • Gaya
  • Adama
  • Kidmat Hagalil
  • Shifra and Mesha (mostly sold in health food stores and some supermarkets)

From the sample testing, the following products ARE fit for human consumption:

  • Zeita
  • Etz Zayit
  • Shufersal
  • Yad Mordechai
  • Meshek Ahiya

In a sample testing, at the time the TV program was broadcast, the olive oil used in 3 coffee shop/restaurants chains: Cafe Cafe, Greg’s & Aroma,  were also tested. The findings showed that most of the olive oil being served, was not pure olive oil but a blend of soya and canola oils.  It was subsequently reported that these eateries had rectified the problem and were now serving pure olive oil in their establishments.

Extra information:

The acidity level of olive oil, for human consumption, should not exceed 0.8%. Check the labeling.

Misrad Habriut, the Ministry of Health, has been investigating & preparing a report on the olive oil market for the past 6 months. They hope to have it complete and published in the near future.
