Israel health funds do coronavirus testing for travelers going abroad.

Health funds logos

Since Israelis are now free to travel to selected ‘green countries’ where the coronavirus active infection rate is low Israel health funds are carrying out coronavirus testing specifically for this purpose.

Coronavirus testing for the purpose of travel is being carried out by Israel’s four health funds: Maccabi, Clalit, Leumit and Meuhedet.  Those requesting a coronavirus test must prove they are traveling by presenting their airline ticket. Upon their departure at Ben Gurion International Airport travelers must present proof of a negative coronavirus test result.

The coronavirus test must be carried out between 48 and 72 hours prior to departure.  Each green country has its own specific requirement.

Tips for Israelis visiting Athens in summer 2021.

Here are our tips for visiting Athens. If you’re planning to travel to Greece, here’s what you’ll need to know and can expect if you want to visit during the current wave of  the Covid-19 pandemic.

Israelis visiting Athens must visit the Acropolis

All foreign tourists can now visit Greece without the need for quarantine on arrival, provided they have a negative PCR test within 72 hours before travel or proof that you’ve been fully vaccinated or recovered (download your certificate from the RAMZOR app).

Current Covid-19 precautions include:

  • Mandatory wearing of masks at all times in public spaces – enclosed and outdoors (non-compliance of this and other measures carries a 300 euro fine);
  • There is currently a night curfew from to 1.30am to 5.30am. You may only go out outside these hours for work, health emergencies or pet walking near your place of residence.
  • Hotels operate as normal under approved Covid-safe measures;
  • Drivers may only carry two passengers in their vehicle (non-household members must wear masks), except in the case of families with young children;
  • Churches have strict social distancing quotas in place;
  • Neighbourhood markets operate at 50% capacity.

Also

  • Museums have reopened with visitor quotas and protocols
  • Open-air archaeological sites are open again with strict protocols;
  • Summer cinemas and outdoor cinema with 75% capacity;
  • Live shows in outdoor spaces and theatre venues with a fixed occupancy rate of 50%;
  • Casinos reopened in May

Athens is a fabulous tourist destination and for a few hundred Euro; accommodation and major tourist attractions, you can enjoy a fabulous 5 day vacay.

It is strongly recommended that all visitors to Greece download the Visit Greece app.  The PLF form, confirmation and other information is easily accessible via the app.  A curfew from midnight to 7am is in place for bars and restaurants in some mainland areas and islands. Face masks are mandatory in all indoor retail and public service spaces.

Here are our tips for visiting Athens this summer as it re-opens after the coronavirus:

Athens accommodation

  1. Accommodation in Athens need not cost a fortune.  Stay away from the crowds and we recommend renting your own apartment (Airbnb has hundreds of options).
  2. You may pay a few dollars more per night but selecting a ‘superhost’ from the Airbnb options has advantages; hosts are experienced, attentive to your needs, respond in a timely manner and are willing to give advice and share their knowledge.
  3. Airbnb is very popular in Athens and should you need to store your luggage before a late check-in or after an early check-out, Airbnb depots are always close by.
  4. If you are doing Airbnb, irrespective of your destination, bring your own bed linen and towels if possible. Most Airbnb’s are clean and well-maintained, but sheets can be a bit questionable. Not all hosts are going to provide good-quality cotton linens with a high thread count and sleeping on synthetic fabric in the peak of the Athenian summer, is not pleasant.
  5. Bring your own chargers for all your communication devices. An extension cord could also come in handy – don’t rely on your host to provide one.
  6. Look for accommodation in close proximity to the Metro line and these three stations. Syntagma station; Akropoli station and Syngrou Fix.  These 3 stations give you access to all the major tourist attractions.

How about traveling to Georgia? It’s a great option for Israelis.  What you need to know.

Public transport in Athens

  1. A taxi from the airport into Athens is around 30 Euro (per cab) and well worth it if you do not want to spend precious hours look for a cheaper alternative.  The metro ticket from the airport into Athens costs around 10 Euro.
  2. Distances between most tourist attractions are not vast and many can be walked but if you are not into that or have small children with you, on day one make sure you purchase the anonymous AthenaCard (a smart transport card like our Rav Kav but much cheaper).  Five days of unlimited travel costs only 9 Euro per person (not including transfers to the airport). For use on trains, buses and trams, the AthenaCard public transport ticket is available at any of the city’s metro stations, tram stops, train stations, newsagents and bus ticket stalls.
  3. Transport card in hand, plan your daily schedule according to the opening times of the various attractions and the sweltering summer sun.
  4. The Metro at peak hour is risky; There are plenty of pick pocketers in Athens, working in teams, and the Metro is a hot-spot for these smooth operators.  They jam the doors of the train and while you are trying to get out you will be blocked, pushed and shoved and your stuff will be stolen in an instant.  Do not put your mobile phone, wallet, passport or any valuables in any of your pockets – be warned, they will disappear. (Remember to sync your photos from your phone to the cloud daily – if your phone does get stolen, at least memories of precious moments will be saved).

Tips for visiting the sites in Athens

  1. If you are in Athens on a Sunday, then that is the day to experience the changing of the guards in front of the parliament buildings and the tomb of the lone soldier in Syntagma Square.  The ‘changing’ takes place hourly, on the hour, but only on Sunday’s the full, almost hour-long ceremony is performed. The ceremony starts at 11:00am.  Get there an hour before in order to get a good viewing spot. Syntagma Square is adjacent to the Syntagma metro station.
  2. Visit the Acropolis Museum after visiting the ancient ruins of the Acropolis so that you can fully appreciate the wonder and spectacle of the ruins and the lifestyle of the Greeks during that era.  Visit the ancient site early in the morning.  You want to avoid the trek up the mountain to the site in the midday sun. There is almost no shade on the site.  Social distancing is enforced. The site hours are 8am – 8pm.
  3. On Monday’s the Acropolis museum closes at 4pm and till 8pm the rest of the week. The queue at the museum is often long so try to purchase your entry ticket online, ahead of time.  You must wear a face mask at the museum and observe social distancing. Check their website for updates and online ticket purchase.
  4. The Monastiraki flea market is accessed via the green and blue metro lines (Monastiraki station) and this is the place to make all your small gift purchases.  Cute, hand made sandals for upwards of 15 Euro can be purchased here too.  There are a few fruit and vegetable stands outside the Metro station but the municipal fruit and vegetable market is an eye opener and well worth a visit (close to the Omonia metro station).  Like any market, keep your valuables close to your body.
  5. The Jewish community in Greece dates back to 300 BCE.  Allow one hour for a visit to the Jewish Museum. The museum now controls the flow of the number of visitors and duration of their stay in order to avoid overcrowding. Health regulations include the use of face masks and antiseptics. Touch screen explanations for museum displays have been suspended.  Check most current regulations here…
  6. The Holocaust Memorial is a little off the beaten track and the outdoor monument is hidden behind a tree on the main road leading to the Keramikos archeological site and museum.
  7. Keramikos is an ancient necropolis and cemetery dating back to the 6th century and an archeological museum also on the site. The closest metro station is “Thissio” on line 1.  The Ancient Site of Kerameikos is  a 5-minute walk from the metro.
  8. Frequent use of antiseptics/alcogel is recommended.

Dining and eating out in Athens

  1. Approximately half way between the Akropoli Metro station and Syntagma is the Plaka. Up-market al-fresco dining you can order a main course for upward of 10 Euro. You’ll also find up-scale boutiques and specialized stores in the Plaka.
  2. For an inexpensive meal – you must try the gyro sandwich. Basically a laffa with a selection of fillings. We are used to tahina on our laffa or pita but in Greece yogurt is widely used. A gyro costs around 2 Euro and is ample for a light meal.
  3. If you choose an apartment on Airbnb you will have access to some cooking facilities.  There are supermarkets and small neighborhood food stores (like our makolet) selling whatever produce you need for your breakfast.
  4. Try the olives – small quantities of different varieties sold in small vacuum packs are a definite must on your breakfast menu.
  5. Corner bakeries selling fresh bread (stale after one day) and other treats; borekas are sold as ‘borek’ they are large pies rather than individual servings as we know here.
  6. Basic pizza takeaway – 6 Euros – enough for two.
  7. Liquor stores often sell their own blends of wine and if you bring your own bottle, they’ll fill it for a few Euro. Bottled wines are more expensive.
  8. Mythos is a popular, local lager beer costing around 1 Euro in supermarkets. Fix is another popular lager you might want to try.
  9. Brettos is a very famous pub in the Plaka.  Don’t leave town without seeing it. Can’t find it, ask a local! Brettos is Athens’ oldest distillery and is home to one of the most stunning displays of hundreds of multi-colored bottles lining the walls from floor to ceiling. Specializing in ouzo, liqueurs, spirits and wines. Brettos is an unique drinking experience!
  10. Take a short ferry ride to Aegina it’s home to the best pistachio nuts.  Raw, unroasted pistachios can be bought in the market stalls off the main road.  You can also buy pistachios pre-packed anywhere in Athens.

We hope you found out tips for visiting Athens useful. Have a wonderful holiday.

Egged’s TikTak taxi transport service.

In Haifa, and coming soon to Jerusalem, the new Egged TikTak taxi transport service (Hebrew: תיקתק).

Now in Haifa and soon in Jerusalem, you can order a taxi via Egged.  From Sunday to Thursday (between 6am and 9pm), the TikTak Egged taxi comes to you and drops you off at your destination anywhere within the Haifa area.  These 10-seater mini vans resemble a sherut but instead they are painted green, yellow and white rather than the black, yellow and white of a regular sherut.

TikTak fare

The base-rate passenger fare is 10NIS but in some instances it can also be 12.50NIS – 15.00NIS in peak hours (from age 5 upwards).

To use of the TikTak service and order their taxi, you need to download the TikTak app (in Hebrew only) from the Google Play, Apple Store or from the Egged website, and fill in your personal details; name, address etc.  A confirmation code is sent to your mobile phone.  Punch in the confirmation code and you will be directed to fill in your credit card details.  Payment is via credit card only and your receipt is sent to your email account. The TikTak ticket costs 120NIS for 10 rides. You can check your account anytime via the app.

The app  was a bit tricky at first but once you understand it, it’s easy to navigate.

The app asks you for your departure address and destination address. Specify the number of passengers and then the exact fare will be quoted.  A timetable will show up with the closest point of departure (usually at a bus stop nearby) and you need to select the time convenient for you, accept and confirm.

The confirmation message will together with a map, tell you the name of the bust stop, the bus stop number, the driver’s name, the license registration number of the vehicle and the time of arrival.  We suggest that you take a screen shot of the confirmation message as checking back afterwards becomes a nuisance.

It is extremely important to note that bus stops on both sides of the road very often have the same name, but each stop has its own identifying number and TikTak pick-up is according to the bus-stop number (not the name),

Is there a senior citizens’ discount?

A 50% fare discount is offered to senior citizens.  Upon registration (via the app), senior citizens are required to attach a copy of their senior citizen card.

Scheduled pick-up time and location

Prior to your journey, you will receive details regarding pick-up time and precise location (usually at a bus stop near you).

Can I order the TikTak service in advance?

TikTak service allows you to order a few hours ahead of time.  Order it when you need it and details of pick-up time and location will be sent to you. If ordered on the spot, you can expect to wait 10 – 15 minutes for the TikTak taxi.

Is TikTak disabled friendly?

Egged’s TikTak vehicles are disabled friendly. Vehicles are equipped accordingly and drivers are trained to assist those in need.  Upon registration, you must provide details of your disability so that a suitable vehicle is made available to you.

Does TikTak work with the RavKav?

You do not need a RavKav for the TikTak service.  TikTak is charged to your credit card.

Service area

TikTak serves the greater Haifa region; from the southern entrance to Haifa goring northwards to Hotzut Hamifratz and eastwards to the university.

User experience

A 5 star experience is what a seasoned Oleh in Haifa (with Hebrew skills) gave the entire TikTak experience – from downloading the app, ordering the taxi and getting to his destination.  He experienced a challenging moment when uploading his senior citizens card but on the second attempt, it worked fine.

We give this experience a 4 star rating.  We would have given it a 5 if there had been an English user interface.  All other aspects of the app, pick-up and drop-off worked seamlessly.  The drivers were friendly and courteous and via the app, they even knew my name.

Traffic light plan as outlined and published in YNET (August 31st), will divide the country into 250 local and regional councils (or zones) with each locality defined by a color ranging from Green for low morbidity to Red with high rates of infection. The designation of color will be decided based on the number of new cases for every 10,000 residents per week, the increase of patients per week, the number of positive test results each week.

Color designation will be in place for a two-week period before being reevaluated according to the increase or decrease of cases and would determine the level of commercial, educational and cultural activity permitted.

In red zones gatherings of more than 10 people indoors and 20 outside would be forbidden. The restriction would apply to prayers during the High Holidays as well.

Orange zones would have a restriction of no more than 25 people indoors and 50 outdoors. Restaurants or other businesses would be able to allow up to 40% capacity.

Yellow zones would allow 50 people indoors and up to 100 outdoors or a 60% capacity in places of business.

The cabinet was unable to reach an agreement on in-school learning in red zones with Education Minister Yoav Galant insisting the school year begin as planned on Tuesday while Gamzu warned it would cause mass contamination and must be suspended.

Local government will be responsible for much of the response and will be assisted by the IDF Home Front Command.

To recap: municipal districts will be divided into 3 categories – red, orange and green according to the infection and morbidity rate.  Varying levels of restrictions will be placed on the red and orange zones accordingly.  Green zones are ones that have low infection and morbidity rates and do not require additional measures to reduce numbers.

The Jerusalem Post published the new policy:

1. A massive and extensive support network and assistance for the population, while providing support under the aegis of the local council.
2. Improving cutting the chain of infection in these cities by means of operational tools, led by IDF Home Front Command.
3. Strict adherence to quarantine of the family unit in order to cut inter-family infection and providing assistance to families.
4. Enforcement and implementation of the current restrictions regarding gatherings.
5. Management of a flexible network of evacuations while giving local quotas above the actual criteria, under the aegis of IDF Home Front Command and the health maintenance organizations.
6. Restrictions on the education system – in coordination with the education system

This policy will require the cooperation of various bodies; government ministries, local government, the Home Front Command (Pikud HaOref and the defense establishment, the Israel Police and under the professional guidance of the Ministry of Health and a professional expert forum set up by Gamzu.

The Coronavirus – Risky Places

Reading Time: 3 minutes

10 places and activities that might increase the risk of catching the coronavirus.

coronavirus risk

We all know that some places pose a greater risk of infection with the coronavirus.  Restaurants, prayer services, at a public pool or in a gym – where are you most likely to get infected? On a scale of 1 – 10 these are the risks.

1.  Israelis love to shop online and at the onset of the epidemic we had no idea if we could contract the virus from various surfaces.  Experts now say that the risk of contracting the coronavirus from mail or packages is extremely low.  Risk level 1/10

2.  Some sporting activities, especially those where close contact is involved are risky but sporting activities where distancing is the name of the game are relatively safe.  Outdoor tennis is a relatively safe activity. Squash, on the other hand is more risky as it played indoors.  Experts give tennis a 2/10 risk level

3.  Israel has just one full size, 18 hole, golf course at Caesarea and if you enjoy the game and are a member of the Pete Dye course you can have a game at relatively low risk.  On a scale of 1-10, golf is ranked at level 3.

4.  At the supermarket – We all need to eat and many of us are born shoppers but, you can completely avoid the risk of infection by being in an enclosed spot for a fairly extend period of time if you shop online.  If you do go to the supermarket, take all necessary precautions.  Aside from disinfecting your hands with alcogel, run a wet-wipe along the supermarket trolley handle. Medical experts rank supermarkets at having a 3/10 risk level.

5.  Staying at a hotel is ranked 4/10.  The longer you stay, the higher the risk.  The dining room is a hot-spot and the risk level there is around 8/10.  A public pool is considered risk level 6/10.  Some hotels are offering virtual check-in but perhaps the best idea right now would be an AirBnB, a house-swap with a friend or camping in a secluded spot.

6.  Avoid the doctor’s waiting room if you possibly can.  Of course the waiting room of a family physician poses a much greater risk than most others. Tele-health devices or apps can help eliminate some doctor’s visits.  This technology relays basic information to the consulting physician.  Some of the health funds offer you the TytoCare telehealth device.  If you are visiting the local branch of your health fund or pharmacy make sure you take all possible precautions.  Many infections in Israel have been transmitted at Kupat Holim and pharmacies.  The doctor’s waiting room is given a 4/10 risk level.

7.  Al Fresco – dining outside is relatively low risk and is best done with members of your nuclear family.  It’s a tough one for restaurateurs who rely on full sittings to cover their costs.  Al Fresco dining gets 4/10.  In fact, if more services could be offered outside, the coronavirus risk could be lowered.   Hair salons and barbershops are much riskier and they are ranked 7/10.  Would you be willing sit outside while your barber gave you a trim and a shave?

8.  The risk of coronavirus infection when having dinner at a friends house is ranked 5/10

9.  Summer camps are ranked 6/10.  They are a much needed service and allow parents to go out to work during the 2 month summer vacay but our Ministry of Health recognizes the risk and as of August 6th, this year (9 days earlier than usual) summer camps will close their doors for the season.

10.  The risk posed by large numbers of people at weddings and funerals, prayer services and other life-cycle and religious events, is well documented.  The current directive for celebrations is 20 people outdoors and 10 people indoors. Prayer services are limited to 10 worshipers.  All over the world religious gatherings have been a source of infection. Risk level is 7/10.

Working out at a gym, going to an amusement park, the movies, concerts with large audiences, pubs and clubs are just some of the other high risk areas and quite rightly there are limitations for these. They have an 8/10 and 9/10 risk factor.

Based on the Texas Medical Association’s ranking.  These rankings were put together by physicians and assume that you are taking maximum precautions including social distancing, wearing a mask and practicing hand hygiene.
