Night-Time Bus Lines – Kavei Leila

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Night-Time Bus Lines Across Israel – Kavei Leila

Hebrew:  קווי לילה

kavei leilaKavei Leila or the night-time bus lines are a country-wide, bus company cooperative of bus routes that start at midnight and end at 4:00am. All fares and discounts are identical to the regular day-time fares.

The Night Lines were implemented in order to provide a safe form of transport for our youth, or anyone who requires it, to return home in the late night hours.

The Night Lines operate daily, in some areas, during school holidays and the summer vacation period. During the academic year, the Night Lines operate on Thursday nights and Saturday nights. These may be subject to change.

The routes listed below are a summary of the general routes and list the main bus stops only. Exact route details and timetables can be found on Kavei Leila’s official site – קווי לילה (only in Hebrew) or on the latest route map below. For more information you can call *8787 from any telephone.

Israel Banking: Deposit Slip Translation

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Hebrew – English Translation of a Bank Deposit Slip (via the self-service)

Hebrew:  שובר להפקדת כספים בתיבת שירות

Navigating your banking in Israel can be challenging.  For smartphone owners most bank transactions are done digitally on desktop computers or via the bank’s App.  Depositing funds via an App is easy and mostly involves taking a photograph of the check from both sides. There is a sector of Israel’s community however, that do not use the internet or internet accessible services.  They are still depositing funds the traditional way.  If you prefer not to stand in queues and lines for banking, you can deposit checks through an ATM or via the bank’s self-service facility.

Self-service deposit slips may vary from bank to bank

The actual document may differ slightly from bank to bank.  This one is from Bank Hapoalim.

Employment in Israel – 15 Top Tips & Suggestions

Reading Time: 4 minutes

Careers & Jobs for English & Foreign Language Speakers in Israel -15 of the Best Employment Tips

Hebrew: עבודה לדוברי שפות בישראל – עצות וטיפים

israel resume

What might be common practice in your country of origin, may not necessarily work in Israel or be acceptable here. Certain aspects of the job-hunt are unique to this country.  Here are a selection of employment tips by Israeli employment experts.

1. Job Tracking System

Implement a job tracking system for yourself.  It could  be a simple form, a mobile app or other software for yourself but it must include the following details: date, company name, job title/description, contact person, contact details and the source the job listing (LinkedIn, newspaper, website etc.)

2. Language Requirements

Should a job require proficiency in a specific language, submit your resume in that language. If you submit a resume in another language,  it will probably be rejected.

3.  Translate your Resume

Many of the local employment agencies provide on-line tips for writing and examples of resumes.  Follow their advice and incorporate them into your resume.  Once you have compiled your resume have it professionally translated into Hebrew.  It is worth the expense. Submit both copies.

4. Proofread your Resume

Your resume makes the initial impression.  If you submit a resume with spelling, grammar and/or other mistakes, you won’t give a very good first impression.

5. Include a Cover Letter

Your cover letter is critical.   Not including a cover letter gives the impression that you are sending your resume anywhere and everywhere, and not taking the time or energy to apply for that particular job.  Refrain from writing your entire resume in the cover letter. A short introduction highlighting why you are uniquely qualified for the position, is enough.

6. A Well Designed Resume

  • Make sure that your resume is no more than 2 pages and do not use a font smaller than 11 pitch – Arial 11 is recommended.
  • Some sources suggest the use of color – writing the companies names in a different color can make it easier for the potential employer to follow up. If you must, only use one contrasting color.  Remember unless you are a graphic designer, you artistic talents are not going to put you ahead.
  • Send your resume as a PDF document.

7. Education & Work Experience

Education vs Work Experience – what comes first? If you studied at a well known university place that on the top page, however if you studied at an unknown university but your career path is impressive – place  your education at the bottom.

8. Special Awards & Prizes

Mention every prize or award received from previous employers.  Top grades in your studies must be mentioned as well.

9. Volunteer Activities

Include your volunteer activities only if they are relevant to your career and work experience.

10.  Previous Employers

Write a very brief description about the companies you’ve worked for in the past – 2 lines is sufficient.  It’s enough to say ‘Office Manager’  – no need to list that you handled the Petty Cash and ordered the stationery.

11. Job Requirements

Read the job requirements carefully.  The requirements are there for a reason. If you are going to send a resume for a position that is not aligned with your experience, then make sure you include relevant and compelling selling points in your cover letter.

If you have been fired, try to come up with a story for leaving that will not show you in a bad light.

12. Connect Directly

If the job posting stipulate an email address to submit resumes – use it.  Unless specifically stated, do NOT communicate via Social Networks. Don’t expect a prospective employer to find your resume in your LinkedIn or Facebook pages. This is an inconvenience to the potential employer.

These days a potential employer will research you on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.  Make sure there are no posts that could compromise your application.

13. Salary Negotiations

It is suggested not ask about the salary before you’ve had at least an initial interview.  You should make a judgment call here.

14.  The Interview

If you are invited for an interview, be sure to bring extra copies of your resume. Do not expect the interviewer to have a copy.

15. Israel Minimum Wage & Rights of Employees

Familiarize yourself with the Israel Minimum Wage Law and the basic legal rights of employees

Bonus Tip

Pay attention to the name you give to your resume when sending it as an attachment to an email or together with an online submission form.  Here are a few bad examples to illustrate our point:

  1. My CV.docx
  2. Resume – Sept 14.docx
  3. Resume Eng version / Heb version.docx

Now, a good example

Israel Israeli Technical Writer Hebrew Resume October 2021.docx.

  1. Make sure you standout and include your name in the title.  An H.R. person will not be bothered to sort through 20 documents all called ‘Resume’ just to find yours.
  2. Include the position you are applying for.  H.R. companies get hundreds of resumes a day for a variety of positions.
  3. Always try to send a Hebrew resume unless otherwise stipulated (or send both)
  4. Make sure the date is current – you don’t want the H.R. person to think that you haven’t bothered to update your resume in years or even if you did update it, make the effort to update the document name too.  Pay attention to small details.

Professional Networking Groups in Israel.

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Join one of Israel’s many professional networking groups.

Hebrew:קבוצות נטוורקינג

employment contract israel

Long ago, the Israelis invented professional networking but called it by a different name.  They called it Protekzia (or Vitamin P as it is commonly known today).

It’s a well established fact that in Israel, if you want something, need to get something done or be accepted into a specialized fraternity or group, the best way is through a connection or with Protekzia.

Some say that if you want to get into a particular unit in the army you don’t do it in the normal way – apply, try out etc.  Your dad’s best friend, Moishe, who fought with him in the Yom Kippur War, is now the Minister of Defense.  Dad will give him a call, he’ll call someone else and organize it.

You need root canal work? Your hairdresser’s brother is a dentist and he is “nehedar” – outstanding – he’ll do it for you and at a good price.  The same is true about getting a job in Israel, do it via your network.

There are many great groups and networks out there.  More and more jobs are being advertised in these groups and networks and in social media and you should be using them too.

These are the  professional networking groups, developed by and associated with the Anglo-list, on LinkedIn

It is strongly advised to get approved for a mortgage before signing a purchase contract. As opposed to other countries where a home purchase can be “conditional upon financing”, a purchase contract for a property in Israel is final once the purchase contract is signed.

It is also important to understand that a bank will approve a borrower based on a percentage of the appraised value of the property. Due to the high prices in many English speaking communities, appraisers can often undervalue properties in these communities. For this reason, it is often recommended to have a property appraised before signing a purchase contract in order to determine exactly how much money the mortgage bank is willing to lend.

Qualifying for a mortgage

Lending institutions in Israel generally approve mortgage applications based on a borrower’s income. A borrower’s assets can contribute to the strength of the application, but the income is a much more relevant factor in approving the mortgage. Borrowers who work in Israel need to provide records of pay slips. Foreign borrowers generally need to provide annual tax statements.

Cosigners and Guarantors (in Israel or abroad) for the mortgage can also be used in the event that the borrower does not have sufficient income.

Mortgage options

There are a number of mortgages options available. Mortgage options are tailored to match a number of factors, including: The currency of your income, place of residency, financial goals, economic outlook and economic standing. Mortgages are available in a number of currencies and are generally available up to a maximum of 30 years.

Mortgage hidden costs

Comparing and choosing the best mortgage option can be challenging. Many mortgages have hidden costs which can significantly increase the cost of the mortgage. An independent mortgage professional can advise you on the most economical option.

Monthly repayments

Following is a table that shows the monthly repayments per 100,000 NIS of mortgage:

      Rate       10 Years       15 Years       20 Years       30 Years
8%  1213  956  836  734
6%  1110  844  716  600
4%  1012  740  606  477
3% 966 691 555 422

Fixed rate or variable interest rate

Most mortgages offered in Israel are variable and are linked to either the Israeli Prime rate, the LIBOR rate, or the Israeli inflation index. Only recently a few banks have begun to offer truly fixed rate mortgages for a maximum of 30 years. Borrowers need to be cautious in insuring that there are no hidden costs or “price floors” in any of these mortgages.

Prepayment penalties

Some mortgage options in Israel have pre-payment penalties in the event that the borrower wants to either prepay the mortgage or sell the property. It is important to clarify with the relevant lending institution if, when and how much prepayment penalties can be.

How much can I borrow?

Israeli lending institutions will generally lend a maximum of 75% of the price of a property directly from a bank. It is possible to borrow a maximum of 90% with mortgage insurance.

Olim Hadashim (New immigrants), Ktinim Hozrim (Returning minors) and Ezrachim Olim (Israeli citizens born abroad)

Olim hadashim are entitled to a fixed rate mortgage up to 15 years after their Aliyah. The mortgage can be taken for a period of between 20 – 28 years. Because the mortgage for new immigrants is rather small, you may need additional sources of funding.

Addition qualifying criteria

There are various other criteria that need to be met in order to qualify for this mortgage;

  • This purchase needs to be your first apartment purchase in Israel.  This applies to both of the spouses.
  • You need to be in possession of a Teudat Zakaut issued by a mortgage bank. (The Teudat Zakaut is document issued by Israel’s Ministry of Housing and Ministry of Immigrant Absorption – Misrad HaKlitah).
  • If you have not yet made Aliyah but have already purchased an apartment , you need to make Aliyah within one year from the purchase date.

Foreigners who wish to purchase property in Israel

The following will also be taken into consideration; collateral, your IDF service, the number of years you have been living in Israel, your age, family status, family size – children, dependents etc.

Mortgages are available to foreigners and can be easily arranged without ever having to come to Israel. These mortgage can be linked to a foreign currency so that individuals can hold their mortgage in the same currency as the income they are earning.
