We remember Lieutenant Colonel Ron Arad, an Israeli Air Force weapon systems officer who is officially classified as missing in action since the 16th October 1986, but is widely presumed dead. Arad was lost on a mission over Lebanon, captured by Shiite group Amal and was later handed over to the Hezbollah.

Arad was married to Tami and is father to a daughter, Yuval.

From the time that Arad went missing, efforts were made to determine his fate.  Finally in October 2016, news reports revealed that a joint investigation carried out by Mossad and IDF Military Intelligence, based on new information received over the previous two years, concluded that Arad had died in 1988.

May his memory forever be blessed.

If you’ve been thinking about teaching English in Israel, here is an opportunity not to be missed.

The national program for expanding and deepening English studies in Israel.

In order to promote English studies in the education system, Israel’s Ministry of Education has formulated a national plan for expanding and deepening English studies in schools over the next four years.

The goal of the program is to increase the number of matriculation examinees at the highest level in English (4 and 5 units). Currently, there is a shortage of quality English teachers in Israel’s education system and at all stages of education: elementary, middle and high school. As part of the national program, the Ministry of Education is preparing to expand the recruitment of English language proficiency teachers. Various academics – both those who came from English-speaking countries and Israelis who are fluent in English, are eligible.

Candidates for the English language training programs must meet all of the following conditions:

  1. Immigrated from an English speaking country or Israelis who are fluent in spoken and written English.
  2. With at least a bachelor’s degree from an institution of higher education in an English-speaking country, accredited by the Ministry of Education, or at least a first academic degree from an institution of higher education in Israel recognized by the Council for Higher Education in Israel.
  3. The score average of the degree is at least 75.
  4. Compliance with the admissions process that will be conducted by the College, which includes a test of compliance with teaching methods, and a test of fluency in spoken and written English.

Upon completion of all obligations in the training program, the institution shall issue a teaching certificate, signed by the Ministry of Education, in accordance with the course which they studied. The program graduates, who are not actual teachers, will be required to do an internship in their first year of employment in the education system.

The program is funded entirely by the Ministry of Education.

Fruit Salad Recipe

0

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Flavorful and exciting tropical fruit salad

How many times have you eaten a boring fruit salad made with apples, pears and bananas? Our recipe is simply delicious and every day is the best day to make our fruit salad.  Almost every fruit you can think about is available in your local shuk (market) or supermarket.  You don’t need huge quantities of fruit – one of everything (almost) is quite sufficient to serve 6-8 people.

If these fruits are not in season right now, replace them with whatever is.

Watermelon – in fact melons of all kinds – are the main ingredient of a successful fruit salad.  They provide sweetness and natural juice.

Ingredients

In a large bowl combine:

1 red apple, cubed (washed and de-seeded but not peeled)

1 green apple, cubed (washed and de-seeded but not peeled)

1 pineapple, cubed into bite size pieces

1 pear, cubed

1 orange, peeled, segmented and then cut up into small pieces

1 clementine (prepare as for the orange)

3 plums, cubed – one of each variety.  In summer there are 3 plum varieties; red, green and prune

1 large and firm persimmon (peeled)

1 firm nectarine, cubed but not peeled

1 mango, peeled and cubed

1 passion fruit (seeds only)

1 large guava, peeled and cubed

1 small bunch of green grapes

1 small bunch of black grapes (if the grapes are large, cut them in half)

The seeds of one small pomegranate

1 small papaya, peeled and cubed

1 small melon, peeled and cubed

1 banana, sliced (add last)

For the sauce

4 tbsp of sugar

The juice of 2 oranges and 2 clementines

Combine the sugar with the juice and pour over the fruit.  Mix well and allow to stand for a couple of hours so that all the flavours blend together and the sugar dissolves.  Adjust the amount of sugar according to your personal taste.  If you have really sweet clementines, you can get away with less sugar.
