‘”Immigrants’  Health Literacy and Behaviors during a Pandemic.” – The Preliminary Survey Report.

 

On 13 April  2020, a research study was launched to learn how the the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) was influencing the health and welfare of English-speaking olim.  This study was approved by the University of Haifa Ethics’ Committee. Although the analyses of the data will take some time, we did want to give you some selected preliminary findings.

Preliminary Report

The survey commenced on 13 April 2020 and was closed on 16 May 2020. A total of 517 individuals opened the questionnaire, but only 411 became participants who responded to the majority of questions.  Below is a preliminary summary of our findings for the 411 participants.

 

1.  Gender

  • Two-thirds of participants were women, the remainder were men.

2.  Age

  • The average age of participants was 54.8 years. Almost 83% were over age 35.

4.  Duration in Israel

  • About 48% of participants have been in Israel 10 years or more, 18% between 5-9.99 years, and 31% between 1-4.99 years. Less than 3% were in Israel less than a year.

5.  Countries – Bar Graph

  • About 45% of participants were from the USA, 14% from the UK, 18% from South Africa, 5% from Canada, 10% from Europe, 3% from Asia, 1% Oceana, and 4% from Central or South America.

6.  Financial Situation with Coronavirus Epidemic: now and 2 months in the future should the closure continue

  • About 50% of the participants reported their financial status was worse now than before the Coronavirus epidemic, and about the same (51%) percentage of participants said that in another 2 months their situation would be even worse if the closure continued.

7.  Employment During Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic

Job status changed in a negative direction in all categories.

  • Pre-Coronavirus 28% had full-time jobs versus 16% now.
  • Pre-Coronavirus 17% had part-time jobs versus 9% now.
  • Pre-Coronavirus 19% were self-employed/freelance versus 15% now.
  • Pre-Coronavirus 12% were unemployed versus 34% now.
  • Pre-Coronavirus 25% were retired versus 26% now.

8.  Coronavirus Recommendations

  • About 41% of participants were extremely confident that they received the recommendations accurately, but only 35% were extremely confident that they received the recommendations on the same day.
  • About 36% of participants were very confident that they received the recommendations accurately, but only 30% were very confident that they received the recommendations on the same day.
  • About 17% of participants were moderately confident that they received the recommendations accurately, but only 21% were moderately confident that they received the recommendations on the same day.
  • About 41% of participants were less or not confident that they received the recommendations accurately, but only 35% were less or not confident that they received the recommendations on the same day.
