If you are considering Aliyah but not yet quite sure, you might want to consider a long-term volunteer program like MASA (MASA is the Hebrew word for ‘journey’). MASA Israel, a public-service organization founded by the Prime Minister’s Office of the Government of Israel, together with The Jewish Agency for Israel. The offer some 200 programs which run for 5-12-months and include study, service, and career development programs for young Jews between the ages of 18 – 30. MASA’s mission is to offer an authentic Israel experiences, empower participants to develop as individuals and also develop a global professional network that includes Israelis and Jews from around the world.
Due to the coronavirus, the Jewish Agency, which helps fund organization’s activities for thousands of young adults, announced on June 28th, 2020 that their MASA Israel Journey budget has been slashed due to coronavirus pandemic. It was announced that participants under age 22 from North America and Britain are no longer eligible for grants for yeshiva and seminary programs.
According to HaAretz newspaper, Masa receives half its budget from the Israeli government and half from the Jewish Agency. Masa’s typical annual budget is reported to be $58 million.
