30 November – 6:21am

  • With the infection rate growing, the Ministry of Health is preparing for a third wave and further restrictions are expected to be put in place that will hopefully curb the rate of infection during the winter flu season and Hannukah, Christmas and New Year period were crowds of people are expected to gather for celebrations.  Another full lockdown is a possibility.
  • Prof. Ash – the new corona commissioner said he will do his utmost to limit damaging the economy and the education system.
  • Crowds packed shopping 15 malls around the country on Friday when the ‘shopping mall pilot’ went into effect. As a result of the excessive crowds, it has been decided to adjust the regulations.  Now only 1 customer per 15m will be allowed entry into a store.  It was decided NOT to open additional malls in order to disperse the crowds but to keep the same 15 malls open during the two week pilot.  Results of the pilot will be reviewed on December 6th.
  • According to the Ministry of Finance, the restrictions placed on the marketplace is costing the the economy 1.5 billion shekels every week.
  • Yesterday’s stats –  Worldometer & Israel MOH

29 November – 7:51am

  • 400,000 grades 10 -12 pupils in green zones return to school today for at least 2 days per week and on other days they will continue studying via zoom.. Not all subjects will be taught at school and others will continue via zoom.  Some high-school educators are against the current set-up saying that fontal learning is best for subjects like mathematics. New pupil grouping regulations (a maximum of 2 groups instead of 4 or 5) at schools, will not achieve best results.
  • Now under deliberation – will the Hannukah winter school vacation be cancelled?
  • First reactions to the shopping mall pilot: Excessive crowds at malls on Friday as large numbers of shoppers are allowed entry against the current directive. Ministry of Health officials suggest closing malls immediately but Ministry of Finance officials suggest opening more malls and dispersing the crowds is a better alternative.

Every store will be allowed one customer per 7m and no more than 10 customers at a time.  The pilot will test out how these centers would operate under strict health guidelines. So far we know that the Malka mall in Jerusalem and the Grand Canyon in Haifa will be opening.
  • Markets will also be opening in full and will not be part of the pilot.  Stewards will attempt to control the crowds of shoppers and ensure they follow directives. Eating in the market will be prohibited.
  • The Ministry of Health and new corona commissioner, Prof. Nachman Ash are not in favor of opening the malls and markets. Prof. Ash said that opening the malls and markets will result in an increase in the rate of infections.  He added that ministers had been forced to submit to enormous pressure.
  • Seven museums will also be re-opening.  Visitors to the museums will have to book their visit ahead of time. So far, four museums have been selected to take part in the pilot program: Madatech museum in Haifa, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art and the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel Aviv. Three more museums will be selected via a lottery organized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Strict rules will be set for visitors and those in violation could face a 5,000NIS fine.

To open or not to open? That is the question.

  • The Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education still have differing opinions.  The Ministry of Health is worried about the infection rate but opening schools is an absolute must and cannot be compared to opening up the market place.
  • In spite of targets (number of new cases, infection rate, seriously ill etc.) not being reached, relaxing of restrictions is expected to continue
  • The MOH:  The restrictions that have been lifted so far have not caused a dramatic spike in infections.

  • Prof. Ash (who replaced Prof. Ronni Gamzu as corona commissioner) is also of the opinion that there is no necessity for a third lockdown over the Hannukah vacation period.

7:10am

  • Yesterday’s 7 hour corona cabinet meeting adjourned without any clear decisions.  The cabinet is to resume today to discuss grades 5 – 6 and grades 11 – 12.  A final decision is expected to be made today and should the green-light be given to return these pupils to school, schools are expected to open towards the end of this week.
  • According to statistics presented to the corona cabinet yesterday by Minister of Education, Yoav Galant, there is no significant increase in the number of coronavirus cases reported in kindergartens.
  • In place of the proposed night time curfew, a shuttering of the economy at 7pm has been suggested. Does that mean offices and transport as well or just retail outlets? No further details are  available at this time.
  • Further lifting of restrictions, or not, is expected to be announced today.  Gatherings of many people at weddings stills remains one of the concentrated points of infection.
  • Channel 13 reports that infection within the Haredi community has plateaued significantly.  The community is reportedly euphoric and are even considering applying to BAGATZ to close their communities off to non-Haredi citizens and not allow them in [something along the lines of a reverse curfew].

    • 35,198 cases per million population

15 November – 7:22am

  • The corona cabinet is to meet again today to discuss further lifting of lockdown restrictions.  Targets have not yet been met (new cases per day, infection rate, serious cases etc.) and as such remaining restrictions should, theoretically, not be lifted.  Pressure from the Education Ministry, Health Ministry and Finance Ministry as well as various political parties is encouraging the corona cabinet to do a possible trade – a night curfew in exchange for opening up certain sectors of the economy and assigning red-zone status to additional towns .  On today’s corona cabinet agenda:
    • Reopening open-air shopping centers (BIG) – perhaps on Tuesday.
    • The map of red zones
    • Grades 5 and 6 – back to school or not?
  • Smaller crowds at anti-Netanyahu demonstrations in Jerusalem and across the country last night.

  • Israel to sign the agreement with Pfizer today.  Israel will be purchasing 4 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine from Pfizer.  A deposit of 100 million shekels was paid for the vaccine.  The vaccine is expected to be delivered in early 2021.  It is not yet knows if all of the vaccine will be supplied at that time, or if delivery will be staggered over a period of months.  Health care workers and high-risk members of the population will be vaccinated first. An interesting bit of information – this RNA type vaccine needs to be stored at -70°C.
  • The night curfew that  PM Bibi Netanyahu has proposed will probably come into effect from next week.  The curfew is likely to be between the hours of 22:00 or 23:00 until 05:00  Will a curfew be effective in bringing down the rate of infection?  Probably not however it is might be used to justify opening other areas of the economy next week.
  • With no final back-to-school decision, Yoav Galant – Minister of Education says that the MOH keeps putting the needs of school children last.
  • Until now, only the elderly were entitled to receive the flu vaccine however, as of today the flu vaccine will be available to all members of the population via your Health Fund.  These are the conditions for getting the flu-shot:
    • At-risk individuals will be given preference
    • You must make an appointment with your Health Fund ahead of time. No appointment – no injection.
    • At this current time there are only about 2.5 million flu vaccines in Israel – not enough for the entire population

12 November – 7:15am

  • While the proposed law to open hotels in Eilat and the Dead Sea has been approved, it cannot yet be implemented and hotels cannot yet open.  The reason: the quick-testing stations that are to be set up in the towns are not yet operational.  Until they are, hotels will not be able to open.  Hopefully next weekend the system will be in place and fully operational.
  • Outline for opening hotels in Eilat and the Dead Sea only:
    • Only eateries and attractions on the hotels’ premises will be allowed to open – other attractions  and restaurants in the area will remain closed
    • Residents of the towns and workers will have to undergo coronavirus testing every week

  • Is a night time curfew on the cards? In an attempt to slow the rate of infection, MALAL recommends a curfew from 10pm.  The MOH opposes the idea citing that it would not be effective.  They are willing to consider a 7pm curfew in exchange for opening up the education system or other parts of the economy.
  • Negotiations between Bibi Netanyahu and the pharma company Pfizer;  Israel hopes to purchase 7 million coronavirus vaccines from Pfizer, an amount sufficient for 3.5 million people.  Israel has already signed an agreement with Moderna for their vaccine but the Pfizer vaccine has fewer side effects.

30 December – 7:57am

  • A hopeful and joyous day in the lives of Jonathan and Esther Pollard as they arrive in Israel.  As per corona rules, they will be spending the next 2 weeks in isolation.  As members of Israel’s Anglo community, we welcome them and wish them every success in their Aliyah journey and integration into Israeli society.
  • According to Prof. Nachman Ash – the current corona commissioner, on a live interview on Channel 13 this morning, there is a strong chance that the corona hotels will shut down and those entering or returning to Israel will be able to self isolate in their homes or other appropriate places. Prof. Ash went on to voice his concerns over the current lockdown saying that it is proving no to be effective.  According to him, one of the reasons for this is that decisions are politically based.  Prof. Ash warns that Israel will see a further spike within the next few days of new cases, seriously ill and deaths as well and a tightening of the lockdown is under consideration.
  • In spite of the current directive, corona virus vaccines are being given to young people via the various health funds.  It is estimated that between 10 – 20% of vaccines, given at health funds, are going to people who are not supposed to be receiving them at this time. The medical fraternity, those with chronic medical conditions, over 60’s and soon teachers are now being vaccinated.
  • Some 800,000 coronavirus vaccines arrived in Israel yesterday.
  • It was discovered that a few hundred vaccines were trashed yesterday, in Southern Israel, due to bad planning and logistics. It is reported that 212 vaccines had to be thrown away in Dimona and 90 in Kiryat Gat.  In order to prevent further wastage, the Ministry of Health announced that should a similar situation arise again in these small towns, they give permission to vaccinate members of the general public who are not yet officially in line.

    • 44,282 cases per million population
    • Seven day, moving average of newly diagnosed cases – 4,273

29 December – 7:34am

  • Chaos around the lockdown – Pupils who should be at school are not, and those that should not, are:  Unfortunately the cabinet did not update the map of red zones (as per the traffic light system) in time and so,  schools in supposed green zones opened (but they were actually red zones) and schools in supposed red zones (which had actually turned green) did not open.  The result of this blunder means that some 640 thousand pupils will be attending school in actual red and orange zones.  Only on Wednesday will the newly updated map be put into effect.  The Ministry of Education is demanding that all pupils be returned to school (red zones, orange, yellow and green).
  • The vaccination program continues with some half a million Israelis already vaccinated.  Teachers on the other hand, who were supposed to be next in line for vaccination, will have to wait a little longer as that part of the program has been delayed.  The Ministry of Education are not happy about this either [rightfully so].
  • Experts suggest that if the vaccination program goes according to schedule, Israel will see the end of the coronavirus crisis within a few weeks.
  • A 49 year old man had a severe allergic reaction yesterday an hour after being vaccinated.  He was treated and his condition has stabilized. He is also allergic to penicillin.
  • Chaos in the corona hotels – some 60% of travelers coming into Israel are sent to self-isolate at home instead of in corona hotels as was decided a couple of days ago. Some sent to corona hotels are complaining that there is plenty of alcohol but very little food.

28 December – 8:08am

The “Lockdown” that isn’t really…

  • In spite of restrictions, traffic into the main cities; Tel Aviv and Jerusalem continues almost as usual.  It is estimated that 60% of the workforce is not affected by the lockdown.
  • The Ministry of Health suggest that if the infection rate stabilizes it will not be necessary to extend the lockdown.
  • Angry parents and confusion within in the school system has led to a revision of the ‘who goes to school’ directive.  The traffic light directive has been re-instated and pupils in red or orange zones only will not attend school with the exception of grades 1 – 4 who will attend school.  All other pupils, countrywide, will – all grades.  (Problem is that the red-zone map has not been updated for a while and it seems that some red zones are in fact, no longer red and others have become red.)
  • Members of the workforce are also confused, let’s hope this clarifies:
    • Government and municipal workers are not working unless they have received a notice to the contrary
    • Teachers are working
    • Essential service workers are working and that includes the security sector, food, pharma and construction
    • Bank employees, insurance companies and Bituach Leumi are working
    • Delivery services and maintenance workers are working
    • And the rest of us in non essential services – the directive is 50% of workers up to a maximum of 10 workers
  • From this morning, the police will be checking in and clamping down; at road blocks, commercial centers and synagogues
  • It is expected that this lockdown will add 120,000 people to the list of unemployed in Israel.
  • The Arab sector commences its vaccination program today.
  • Long queues at Ichilov Hospital and logistical issues force many to go home without getting their vaccination.
  • Yesterday’s stats –  Worldometer & Israel MOH
    • 401,470  total cases recorded since the onset of the pandemic
    • 34,232 active cases
    • 3,498 newly diagnosed cases yesterday

  • Police will be concentrating their efforts on crowd control – 10 people indoors and 20 outdoors is the directive.
  • It looks like the mutated virus is gaining foothold in Israel and there is fear that tens of cases are positive. The MOH is preparing to set up a national laboratory that will be charged with tracking the mutation. Special isolation facilities for those diagnosed with the mutation, are to be put in place.
  • Aside from Britain and South Africa (and now Israel), the mutation has also been discovered in Germany and Ireland.  Vaccine manufacturers; Pfizer and Moderna are confident that their vaccines will be effective in the battle against the mutated virus.

The logistics of an election under the current health crisis is likely to be hugely challenging. The question on everyone’s minds is how corona patients will vote?
  • Israel’s 3rd lockdown is expected to commence next weekend and will be in place for 3 weeks. The corona cabinet is expected to meet today to finalize details.  Is a 3rd lockdown necessary? The infection rate is rising rapidly and the number of patients in serious condition has risen considerably and now there is the mutation to deal with as well.

  • The Minister Health, Yuli Edelstein: The idea is that once you have received the second vaccine, around 2 weeks thereafter, you will be given certain privileges  – perhaps a ‘green’ passport, traveling to certain destinations without a corona test or an exemption from isolation.  Edelstein also hopes that Pesach 2021 will be celebrated without restrictions.

As we are all rejoicing over the vaccine and the pace Israel is vaccinating its citizens, the months ahead may be more complex and more perilous to navigate as the variants seem to be  more transmissible, which means it will likely require an even greater effort to keep spreading under control.

  • There is also a move to open the vaccination drive to all remaining populations, ages 40 and below.  Approximately 80% of those above age 60 have been vaccinated which means that the rest of those vaccines allocated to that age group could be given to any age-group.  Against official instruction, 2 of the health funds are already administering the vaccine to all members of the public and all are pressurizing the government to do so.  The HMO’s say that have the manpower to vaccinate more people on a daily basis.  Does Israel have sufficient stocks of the vaccine in order to open up the drive at this stage?  The matter is under discussion.

  • What about NATBAG? What will be the fate of travelers coming into Israel and outgoing Israelis? Rules for NATBAG had somehow fallen off the agenda. Incoming travelers have been sent to corona-hotels or  into isolation, but according to the system none have been required to present a negative corona test upon entering Israel as Israelis are expected to do when traveling to other countries.  This effectively caused a huge leak of infected travelers entering the country. There is no talk of shutting down the airport completely.  Miri Regev, Minister of Transport “It is impossible to shut the airport. Why? Thousands of Israelis need to return home and new immigrants must enter the country.” During an interview on Channel 13, Monday night, she said that testing must be done at the airport.  Up until now NATBAG has been operating under the purple- and blue-badge system. Israel’s attorney general has now agreed that stronger measures must be taken in order to seal the leak from NATABG into Israel.

  • As healthcare services collapse, the lockdown is expected to continue for at least another week but Israel should begin to see a drop in the infection rate within the next few days.  The vaccination campaign and a reduction in the infection rate will count favorably towards shortening the lockdown.  On the other hand there is serious concern about the numbers infected with the new UK coronavirus variant and the number of hospitalized patients and this could count toward extending the lockdown.

The results of this lockdown and the vaccination campaign will be seen in the next two weeks.  I hope that we will not need to extend the lockdown but I believe that two weeks will not be sufficient.”
  • 100,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine are to arrive in Israel today at 3pm.
  • A real fear that the vaccines will not be effective against the South African variant of the coronavirus (The SARS-COV-2 Virus – currently termed 501.V2 Variant). Dr. Alroy-Preis “The South African strain is troubling because it might lead to higher rates of infection amongst the younger populations”.

  • KAN reports that Yuli Edelstein – Minister of Health is to have said “If we don’t take the harshest steps possible, by March or April we will be like Italy was in the first month of the pandemic,”
  • The corona cabinet is finally set to meet today at 12pm to discuss the possibility of tightening the current lockdown. Thew new lockdown could bring the following restrictions:
Current Lockdown Full Lockdown
Education Almost fully operational Shuttered completely
Marketplace Officially closed Completely shut down except deliveries
Workplace 50% of non-essential workers Only essential services
Movement Up to 1,000m Possibly up to 500m
  • Alternate Prime Minister Benny Gantz who is said to be opposing the idea of a full lockdown is now saying that he will agree to it under certain circumstances which would include vaccinating teachers and finding a way to keep schools open and give pupils more school days.
  • Although young children are often asymptomatic or generally have very mild symptoms, “they infect each other and their families” said Prof. Nachman Ash – the corona commissioner.  Over 12,000 pupils are currently infected with the coronavirus which is approximately 25 percent of the total number of currently infected in Israel.
  • Yoav Galant – Minister of Education is reported to have said, on an interview on Channel 13 last night, that pupils are being used as ‘reverse babysitters’ for their parents and keeping schools closed is a way of making sure that parents cannot get to work (thereby indirectly shuttering some of the workplace)
  • The Director of the MOH is reported to have said that the politicians have tied the MOH’s hands .
  • Beilinson hospital can no longer accept any more patients in their E.R.
  • Threats are also being made to halt the supply of vaccines to Ichilov hospital after it became apparent that they were vaccinating teachers (who are not yet in line). Prof. Ronni Gamzu (ex-corona commissioner) cannot understand why the police force are in line to get vaccinated before teachers.
  • On the international front Britain goes into a full lockdown as the mutated virus spreads significantly. This time they have shuttered schools as well.

4 January – 7:22am

  • The British mutated coronavirus gains foothold in Israel and in the town of Efrat.  All schools in the settlement to be closed.
  • Currently there are thousands of teachers and pupils in isolation. The current directive –  If more than 3 pupils are corona-positive in a school, the school must shutter.
  • Still no clear decision regarding upgrading the lockdown – the Ministry of Health and government officials do not see eye-to-eye
  • Prof. Nachman Ash – Corona Commissioner is in favor of a lockdown within the next day or two – he sees no reason to wait for Sunday. He is also in favor of shuttering the entire education system.  He went on to say that the sooner we lockdown, the shorter the lockdown will be, and in order to do so, we have to shut everything down.
  • The corona cabinet are expected make an announcement regarding a full lockdown within the next days
  • Shopping malls, restaurant owners and fashion threaten: Shut everything down or we will open up.
  • Some Arab villages like Madj el Shams, Massade, Gush Halav, Majd El Krum have infections rates of around 9% (currently the national average is 6.6%).  Residents of Arab villages, across Israel, are reportedly making appointments to get their vaccine however some 40% never show-up.
  • Yesterday’s stats –  Worldometer & Israel MOH
    • 441,542  total cases recorded since the onset of the pandemic
    • 49,643 active cases
    • 5,135 newly diagnosed cases yesterday

    • 731 in serious condition of which 201 are reported to be intubated
    • 24 deaths recorded yesterday – total death toll: 3,416
    • 47,716 cases per million population
    • Seven day, moving average of newly diagnosed cases – 5,343

3 January – 6.34am

  • The positivity rate begins to soar again – reaching over 6% yesterday and now the Minister of Health – Yuli Edelstein is requesting a full and hermetic lockdown for a period of two weeks. He would like further restrictions to be placed on the education system as well as on the marketplace. He said that if Israel does not act swiftly we will see a catastrophe like in Britain.  He went on to say that we have to curb the spread of the mutated virus,  He estimates that Israel is likely to see more than 9,000 daily infections (the number we saw in the previous lockdown) within 2 weeks if we do not move quickly.
  • PM Bibi Netanyahu also calls for tightening restrictions yet, in spite of the dramatic increase in the number of infected, a meeting of the corona cabinet has not yet been scheduled to discuss the current situation.
  • Furthering the lockdown is fast becoming an election tool with the Netanyahu camp accusing the Gantz camp of hampering additional restrictions from being put in place.
  • Officials in the Ministry of Education are of the opinion that shuttering schools is a tactic which forces parents to remain at home thereby indirectly shuttering the marketplace. If schools are shuttered it also justifies the much talked-about delay in vaccinating teaching staff.
  • With over 1 million citizens already vaccinated, Israel will see a slow down in the vaccination program as stocks of the vaccine are running low.  All those who have already received the first dose of the vaccine, are assured that their second dose will be administered as scheduled however it is expected that the Health Funds will not be vaccinating new patients next week..  Sheba Medical Center will be slowing their vaccination program down and no longer be vaccinating 24/7.  Rambam Medical Center in Haifa, is expected to cease vaccinating in the coming week.
  • Another shipment of the covid-19 vaccine is expected in Israel in February and the country is doing its utmost to get the delivery date moved up as soon as possible.
  • The Ministry of Education maintains that the Ministry of Health is micro-managing the crisis and “handling it like they would an emergency-room and not like a country.”
  •  Demonstrations in 2 locations in Jerusalem on Saturday night; 20 people are arrested at the “Ahuvia Sandak Demonstration” and 10 are arrested at the anti-Netanyahu demonstrations.

    • Seven day, moving average of newly diagnosed cases – 5,162

Facebook Free Advertising – Advantages and Disadvantages

The advantages and disadvantages of Facebook free advertising.

facebook free advertising2

Facebook is the biggest social media site around, with more than two billion people using it every month. That’s almost one third of the world’s population!  Some 65 million businesses use a Facebook fan page to promote their services while others make use of their personal profiles. Hardcore marketers and medium sized businesses are willing to pay Facebook’s price for a selection of highly targeted adverts running simultaneously but what about small business owners?

After a rather bumpy landing, our Oleh (we’ll call him Benji – an electrician by trade but now willing to do all home repairs) is looking for ways to get the word out about his business cheaply and effectively.  His friends tell him that he must have a social media campaign and most definitely a Facebook presence.  Benji is filled with enthusiasm and he rushes off to open a Facebook page (Heb. slang – Fase) and an Instagram (Heb. slang – Instoosh) account, a YouTube channel and a Whatsapp group.

After having posted photos of himself fishing on lake Okeechobee in Florida, Benji is ready to get serious and start promoting his business. Benji is a proud man and offers his clients the ‘best customer service in Israel’.  He thinks of himself as reliable, efficient and trustworthy and that becomes the tagline for his business: No fellow oleh could refuse such an offer.

He is very proud of his unique sales proposition: “Benji’s Electrical and Home Repairs. Reliable, Efficient and Trustworthy” and he’ll use this for his Facebook promotion.  He finds a free stock image to use with his campaign and he is ready to go.

He proudly posts his first ad on his Facebook profile, shares it with 743 friends and sits back waiting in anticipation.  Twenty three of his best school friends, like his post but aside from that nothing else happens.  He scratches his head as he looks into Facebook paid advertising and soon realizes that it is way too complicated for him; bidding for keywords, targeting, click-thrus, impressions and analyzing data – things he knows nothing about.  He concludes that at this stage, free advertising on Facebook is the best option for him.  He joins 20 groups in his area each with hundreds of members; Secret Raanana, Secret, Secret Raanana, English speakers in Raanana, Americans in Raanana – you get the picture. Unfortunately his ad does not go viral and the phone does not ring. Hmmf! Benji joins another 50 groups. After some serious reflection he decides that he’s now prepared to work outside of Raanana too.  It’s taken him almost the entire day to research all the Facebook groups, join them and wait for membership approval. Finally he is set to begin his campaign in earnest and he’ll start doing that tomorrow if he gets a chance.

He compares groups – some have a few thousand members; “Aah”, Benji says, “I’ll post in those groups to get the most exposure”.  He is really excited and filled with enthusiasm.  A few days go by and except for a WhatsApp message from someone who asks if he works in Beer Sheva, no work has come his way.

He decides to track back. He starts with the big groups. His message was appealing and the image was cute – he should have seen referrals coming through.  He scrolls down the page on one of the groups and can’t find his ad.  He continues scrolling and as he does so, he sees lots of other similar ads; an electrician in Kfar Saba, a plumber in Herzliya, a handyman in Rosh HaAyin and they too are proud of their “Clean, Efficient, Reliable and Trustworthy” service.  He continues to scroll and scroll and he still can’t find his ad.  He wonders if he actually posted there or in some other group.  He moves on to another and another and another. Time passes quickly and he notices that he has been searching for three hours and still no luck!  A little despondent, he comforts himself and says he’ll try again tomorrow and the day after as well, if need be. “I must persevere, it’s free”.

He wakes up in the morning and suddenly he has a light-bulb moment –  If he couldn’t find his own ad, how could others find him?

Does this scenario sound familiar? Aside from the ‘free’ appeal, these are some of the downsides

  • Researching and joining appropriate groups takes time
  • Posting in these groups is very time consuming.
  • Big groups attract lots of advertisers
  • Adverts get pushed down the page very quickly. Out of sight is out of mind.
  • Facebook advertising does nothing for your Google presence

Let’s change gear slightly and introduce Hadas who is looking for an electrician to handle her emergency and she is asking herself these questions..

  • When did I see the ad – last week, the week before, one month ago?
  • Who posted it? What’s the name of the electrician?. How can I find it?
  • What was the name of the group, I saw the advert in? Was it a local group or a general group?
  • Oh no! I now have to scroll through hundreds of posts to find the one I am looking for. I wish the ads were properly organized.

Hadas finally gives up.  She goes back to Google and does a keyword search “English electrician Raanana”.  She is delighted when a few trusted resources pop up with the information she has been trying to eke out of Facebook for days. Unfortunately for Benji, he did not show up in the results as beyond Facebook free ads, he does not have a marketing plan.

Remember – free advertising is free for a reason.

What should you really be looking for when you are trying to market your business?

  • You should be looking for a solid resource that people know and trust.
  • You need to be targeting resources that target your type of clientele
  • Out of sight is out of mind – you don’t want that at all.
  • Get found easily – a quick search should be all you need.
  • More does not mean better.  Having a choice of 200 electricians listed sounds incredible but Benji would do better by being one of a handful of electricians advertising his services.
  • Your goal should be to increase your Google presence

What do you get when you pay for advertising? You are paying for someone else’s skills and knowledge and their proven ability to get results.

  • Do you know anything about Google’s forever changing algorithms for ranking content? A professional does.
  • Do you know anything about SEO – Search Engine Optimization? The professional does.
  • Do you know how to interpret your analytical data? They do.
  • Do you understand your target demographic and how best to reach and control them.  They do.

Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination.

Memorial Day service for Yitzhak Rabin

yitzhak rabin assassination
Congressman Terry Everett with Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin on June 6, 1993 – Wikimedia

Thursday  October 29th, 2020 is the 25th official memorial day for Yitzhak Rabin, the 5th Prime Minister of Israel, corresponding to 12th of Cheshvan in the Hebrew calendar.

In the shadow of the coronavirus and the various restrictions and limitations that are currently in place, the program for the memorial services are as follows:

  • 10:00 – Official memorial service
  • 11:00 – The family will gather at his graveside for the Mourner’s Kaddish
  • 13:00 – A special session in the Knesset plenum hall
  • 18:00 – Gathering and tribute at Rabin Square in Tel Aviv
  • 19:00 – Memorial candle lighting and closing ceremony

Numerous online events will be taking place today including age-appropriate lessons for pupils studying at home via zoom.

Updates

  • At the memorial candle lighting ceremony at Rabin Square on Thursday evening 25,000 memorial candles were lit -1,000 candles for every year that has passed since Rabin’s assassination.
  • The SHABAK also stated that in their opinion, Yigal Amir (Rabin’s assassin), ever after 25 years, still presents a threat to the security of this country.  The SHABAK maintains that many of Israel’s youth support the murder and the actions of Yigal Amir and are willing to act on his behalf.

An entire generation of youth has grown up since Rabin’s assassination and  although many support the murder, a large number have little idea about Yitzhak Rabin’s personal life.

  • Yitzhak Rabin had an illustrious career as an Israeli politician, statesman and general. He was the fifth Prime Minister of Israel, serving two terms in office, 1974–77, and 1992 until his assassination in 1995.
  • His parents were originally from the Ukraine
  • Rabin’s father changed his surname from Rubitzov to Rabin in 1917
  • Rabin spent 2 of his high school years at the Kadoorie Agricultural School as originally he aspired to being an irrigation engineer.  He was a good student but hated studying English as it was the language of the “British enemy”.
  • Rabin married Leah Schlossberg in 1948
  • He served as Israel’s ambassador to the United States from 1968 to 1973
  • In 1994, Rabin won the Nobel Peace Prize together with long-time political rival Shimon Peres and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
  • The 12th of Cheshvan, the murder date according to the Hebrew calendar, is the official memorial day of Rabin
  • Rabin Square (Hebrew: כיכר רבין‎, Kikar Rabin), formerly Kings of Israel Square (Hebrew: כיכר מלכי ישראל‎, Kikar Malkhey Yisrael), the site of his assassination, is a large public city square in the center of Tel Aviv. Over the years it has been the site of numerous political rallies, parades, and other public events. In 1995 the square was renamed ‘Rabin Square’ following his assassination which occurred there on November 4th, 1995.
  • In 1995 the Israeli Postal Authority issued a commemorative Rabin stamp
  • Many cities and towns in Israel have named streets, neighborhoods, schools, bridges and parks after Rabin. The country’s largest power station, Orot Rabin, two government office complexes (at the HaKirya in Tel Aviv and the Sail Tower in Haifa), the Israeli terminal of the Arava border crossing with Jordan, and two synagogues are also named after him. Outside Israel, there are streets and squares named after him in Bonn, Berlin, Chicago, Madrid, Miami, New York City, and Odessa and parks in Montreal, Paris, Rome and Lima. The community Jewish high school in Ottawa is also named after him.

Opinion: Middle East Peace and Israel’s Economy

Opening skies and a new Middle East peace. But is the economy in Israel on the Mend?

israel economy jay haitBy Adv. Jay Hait …Jay made Aliyah in 2004 from New York. After going through a nasty divorce, he won custody of his three young children and remarried in 2011. His personal experience with the legal system in Israel was the impetus to opening his family law practice where he is committed to saving others from his negative experience.

What does this new economic partnership mean for the bigger picture of our little country?

Covid 19 interrupted so many things we all took for granted: good health and immediate access to health care; going out for coffee; sending our kids off to school; going to work; having a job; travelling out of the country.

Everything came to an abrupt halt. So many of my Family Law clients are rethinking their wills and the management of property they own outside of Israel. I’ve had a large uptick in calls inquiring about divorce. And quite a few of us, myself included, have family living abroad whom we have no idea when we’ll see again. Air travel has been a lifeline to those we love. And of course the travel industry has been gutted.

Are things looking up?

Now that flights are resuming in a very limited capacity, there are many stumbling blocks for those who want to go abroad. The details are confusing at best. How many flights will there be and how frequently? What countries are Israelis allowed to enter? Who can come here? With so many embassy and government offices closed, are we able to renew passports and get visas? Is everyone required to do a Covid test at the airport? How much will it cost? How high will the price of travel insurance go? And the quarantine rules seem to change daily.

And yet, we have this groundbreaking new economic deal with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan which brings both promise and uncertainty.

So, what do the opening skies and this new economic partnership mean for us in Israel?

I don’t think this limited resumed air travel will have much effect on the massive economic decimation of our economy. It definitely won’t restore our tourist industry – restaurants, pubs, museums, guides and other cultural businesses. But I hope it will be the start of at least some improvement. And I believe the new peace agreements with these three Arab countries (hopefully more will follow suit) will have a limited significant short-term effect on the economy. Perhaps both will bring an economic and psychological boost to us in the long term.

So, even though these two positive developments seem like pouring a trickle of water on the burning house of our economy, at least it’s a start.

The approach the U.S. administration took to brokering these peace deals was pretty radical. They took a problem viewed in one way by so many people for so long, and refocused the lense. The Palestinians had always been at the center of any proposed deal and we Israelis were repeatedly called upon to make concessions for peace. We all know how that’s turned out.

In this new approach, the Palestinian issue was mostly put aside – delayed if you will – while other’s interests were formalized. We, in Israel, have paid a price for the UAE peace agreement (the non-annexation of Judea and Samaria). However, I don’t believe it should be our focus for now. (I acknowledge I’m ignoring the Israeli-Palestinian issue here). Granted, these places are part of our biblical homeland and theologically they should be part of our country. But I can’t help but feel, that all the leaders in these negotiations need to have a different focus right now. In my view we’ll have plenty of opportunities in the future to adjust things a little more towards our national best interests.

The goal of our leaders (and leaders everywhere for that matter), should be to keep all citizens safe and healthy while at the same time concentrating on saving as much of our economy as possible until the Covid crisis has passed.

Once these two goals have been achieved, everything else can be addressed. Because without our physical and economic health, very few of our other pressing issues can be addressed at all.

Opinion: Three coronavirus tests

3 coronavirus tests.

paul nirensBy Paul Nirens… made aliya from Melbourne Australia in 1984 and has lived in the North of Israel from that time. He is married and has 4 adult children and lives in the community neighbourhood of kibbutz Tuval. He is a trained chef and owns a culinary tourism enterprise, organizing cooking workshops and culinary tours in the Galilee.

By the time this corona pandemic is finished, I imagine that every single one of us will have had at least one test, but in all probability, a lot more than that.

I’m up to three so far and thankfully, all negative, even if at the time of the first one I had exactly the same symptoms as my wife, Susan, who tested positive. Go figure. I see 3 possible explanations for that:

1- That Susan’s cold symptoms, without fever or loss of smell or taste meant that they were just cold symptoms and she didn’t have Covid19 but received a false positive. She gets really angry with me when I suggest this. It’s as if I’m disparaging her badge of honour.

2- That my cold symptoms, without fever or loss of smell or taste, meant that I had Covid19 but received a false negative

3- I had it but was already past it by the time I got tested.

Whatever. I’ll never know.

I have already described the test experience so won’t go over it again, other than it was a time machine back to Israel of the ‘80s with a few modern test tubes.

The second test was taken at the same location as the first. That’s where the resemblance ended. If at the time of the first test there were 40 people jostling with all the decorum of a Delhi spice market, then 2 weeks later the place resembled a pork butchery in Me’a She’arim. Not a soul, other than me, a guard and the lab technicians in hazchem suits.

Test number three, I underwent so that I can escape the madness of Israel to the calm and sanity of the USA, at Nahariya Hospital. Ahhh. It was a quintessential Israel experience.

You start with the guard at the front gate, and whilst a long line of people produced certificates, permissions, 50 shekel notes and ID numbers in order to be allowed through the hallowed metal detector, Susan uttered the magic words “corona test before an overseas flight” and we were ushered through without any of the registration procedures. I honestly don’t know why this was the case, but as we walked down the corridor towards the hospital entrance we heard behind us people suddenly changing their minds, and the endoscopic procedure at 12.15 suddenly became a corona test.

We were instructed to go to the outpatients clinic, which seemed logical and upon finding the correct reception window (After wandering like lost sheep from the first window, which shunted us to the second which pointed to the third) sure enough, our names and ID numbers were in the system for the time we had arrived. The nurse printed a white sticker and pointed us to window number four in order to pay. Why we couldn’t pay the person who gave us the white sticker remains a mystery. Upon payment, the white sticker was taken from us and replaced with a yellow sticker. “Go now to the Emergency Ward, Basement Level to do your test” we were instructed. So the outpatients was just the accounts branch of the Emergency Ward. Got it.
After passing a small group of patients in hospital gowns, attached to intravenous drips and Marlboro cigarettes, we marched into the Emergency Ward, to window number five, with our little yellow stickers ready for use. The nice lady there said that we had to find the Emergency Ward Basement Level, out the left, around the corner and down the stairs. After a somewhat medical version of Alice Through The Looking Glass, we found the right place.

I don’t know if it’s just the hospitals in the North, or all hospitals in Israel, that have an entire medical centre in waiting, underground, in the event of a worst case scenario of a chemical warfare attack, or rocket attacks from our friends across the border, 7 km to the North. So here we were, continuing on with the said medical version of the Lewis Carroll novel, wandering an empty labyrinth in search of the person who would take our saliva. Sure enough, we eventually found the correct person, who was actually the only person other than ourselves in this entire basement hospital. She too was very nice, but seemed entirely oblivious to the surrealism of the situation, chatting about the coronavirus and overseas trips in surroundings that suited Sarejavo circa 1994. Emir Kusturica was about to shout “cut” at any moment.

After gagging on the long cotton bud, which was then shoved up my nose with ruthless efficiency, we’d finished. 5 hours later the negative results came, in Hebrew, of course, even though the test was specifically defined for those travelling overseas. We need them in English for Logan Airport. Getting the results in the correct language will be tomorrow’s struggle.

Opinion: Israel is here to be a light to the world and of acting in smart and ethical ways

Israel is here to be a light to the world, a light of morality, of acting in smart, ethical, and G-d centered ways.

logo 200x188by Naomi Banschick… an American in Israel since age 25, now age 50, wife and mother, Torah-observant, Jerusalem resident and environmental anthropologist

As a researcher who studies various health issues to try to discover the points of truth about them [which often lie between, or outside of, the two seemingly opposing sides], this new situation, a pandemic causing sweeping changes to our societies, has proved to be an interesting challenge to try to understand.

Rather than taking the word of a politician, or manager, the president, prime minister, Health Minister, head of a large organization funded by the government, I prefer to look at the science, the facts, and the opinions of experts on issues. What are the various scientists, clinical doctors, epidemiologists, researchers, environmental safety workers, economists, mental health experts, and others saying in these challenging times?

In Israel is the greatest place to live because of its spiritual wealth as well as its physical desirability- pleasant weather, seas, and so on.

Yet, we forget that Israel is here to be a light to the world, a light of morality, of acting in smart, ethical, and G-d centered ways. When people in the government make decisions that affect our health by locking us up, they are creating many smaller crises like lack of peace for the individual or family in the home, lack of income, lack of exercise, fresh air and other ingredients of mental health, lack of social experiences, and very importantly, lack of school for our growing children. These repercussions of policy are unacceptable.

Yet the lives of the religious public in Israel are guided by rules, rules set down by the Torah yet interpreted for us often by our leaders. We are used to following rules and we do so too well sometimes. We lock ourselves up and wear double masks, keep our children away from schools even if they do open, and refuse to see our own elderly parents or provide them company and help. All of this is causing physical suffering for some, as masks are shown to be unhealthy if worn for long periods of time (as our children do when they go to school, or outside even), elderly people need company and especially their families. People need to socialize and need to get outside of their cramped, dark apartments.

Yet, we are Jews here and we look at the bright side. We look for the good we can accomplish, the benefits of our situation. We bond with our families whom we finally get to see. We use our free time to do those things we always wanted to do. We impose our own structure on our lives if our outside structures are taken away. We celebrate our holidays, our Holy days are we always have, wherever we happen to be, with whomever we are with. If it is in shul, synagogue, if it is at home, if we are stranded in the desert or in a death camp…it is all the same to us. It is our speical day and we will celebrate, keep whatever traditions we can, keep all the laws we know, and rejoice in our lot.

May the light of our Creator and Torah shine on you today!

Contemplating Divorce – 10 Steps for your financial future

Reading Time: 6 minutes

10 steps you should be taking now for your financial future, if you’re contemplating divorce this year.

It’s a sad fact that you didn’t plan to be where you are today.

divorce steps

It’s a sad fact that you didn’t plan to be where you are today. When you stood with your new spouse under the chuppah (wedding canopy) you thought you would build a life together, have a home, raise a family and it’s incredibly disappointing to come to the point where you’re contemplating divorce, no matter what the reasons are. Your emotional well being, the effect divorce will have on your kids and your spouse’s reaction are all uppermost in your mind.

Check out this short video on topics to be addressed for couples considering divorce.

And then…there’s the money. Dividing a household financially is difficult at best and debilitating at worst. Add to that the fact that you and your spouse’s disparate feelings about money may very well be a contributing factor to your desire for divorce, and you have a potentially volatile situation.

That being said, there are steps you should be taking long before you ever file for divorce or file a motion to settle differences with your spouse, in order to ensure that you get the best financial results you are legally entitled to. It’s difficult at a time like this to focus on your financial future but it is incredibly important to begin preparing for the financial dissolution of your relationship if you are considering divorce in the next 12 months. And if you and your spouse stay together in the end, following these 10 steps will be helpful in coming up with a financial plan for your future together.

As Benjamin Franklin said, “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

Once divorce is mentioned in a marriage, it very often happens that all sorts of documents, once freely available, start to disappear. By taking the following steps prior to divorce being filed or even spoken about, and making a file for each of the categories suggested below, you will have all the documents and evidence to fairly determine the final asset split and any support payments that will have to be decided upon.

Step #1:Proof of the assets you own.

This list should include both liquid and illiquid assets (i.e. cars, real estate, banking and/or investment accounts, stocks, jewelry, etc.) The best proof is either a deed, photo of the asset or a copy of the account statements. In the case of household items like furniture and lawn equipment, receipts from purchase are best but if not available pictures will suffice. The general rule (and there are exceptions) is that all assets acquired during the course of the marriage are split equally.

Step #2: Make a spreadsheet or notebook page detailing when all of your assets (from Step #1) were purchased.

Also note, if you can, where the funds to purchase them originated and in whose name they are registered. The date they were purchased may affect the division of the assets. This is especially true in the case of assets that were acquired prior to the marriage and/or by funds belonging to one party only and kept in a separate name. Have this information available to prepare for the best and worst case scenarios if you move towards divorce.

Step #3: Proof of income for both of you.

This list should include: monthly pay stubs, (Form 106 from the Israel Tax Authority), bank transfers into your accounts, tax receipts if either of you is self-employed. Two things often happen during divorce. 1) The actual money from a spouse’s salary deposited in the bank suddenly diminishes. 2) The proof of income may just disappear. Either of these things can affect how child support will ultimately be determined – especially in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling regarding child support in joint custody cases. Don’t get caught off guard. Make sure that you have one year’s past records available to you.

Step #4: Collect receipts from all of your monthly housing related expenditures.

You should have receipts for: rent or mortgage, property tax(arnona), electric, water, gas, gardening, recurring repairs, etc. Child support payments in Israel are made up of three components, one of which is called madoor (housing). All of these documents (a year’s worth if possible) will go into the calculations of any child support payments.

Step #5: Detail all of your debts.

This should include both the debts you and your spouse have jointly and the debts that either of you may have under your own names. This can be done either by getting legal documents – like in the case of a mortgage or loans made by family members – or by getting copies of statements for bank loans, etc. (It’s helpful to note that if your spouse got a loan from one of their family members and you had no knowledge of it, you may not be liable for it!)The general rule is that debts, like assets, accumulated during the course of the marriage will be split at the end of the marriage.

Step #6: Collect receipts from all the monthly expenses connected directly to your children.

Gather the school fees, afternoon activities costs, medical and dental costs, clothing, etc. All these documents will be important in determining the final amount of child support awarded. Since men generally pay child support in Israel they vastly underestimate the costs while women tend to exaggerate the numbers. If you have collected these documents, you will know the real numbers and be able to accurately calculate what you will be paying or receiving for child support. Learn how remarriage affects child support payments in this short video.

Step #7: Make a copy of any pre-nuptial agreements.

Prenups are generally binding and applied by courts in Israel. It is important to have your prenup evaluated by a competent family law attorney before you take any legal actions, to determine if all or only certain parts of it are valid, and how it affects your particular situation. The earlier the better.

Step #8: Detail both of your pensions.

All too often a judge, a mediator or an attorney will push the parties in a divorce to agree to each side keeping their own pension rights, because they are too lazy to do the work collecting that information. This is despite the fact that by law, any pension rights that were accumulated during the course of the marriage are to be split equally at the termination of the marriage. Sometimes these irresponsible actions have led to parties giving up rights worth hundreds of thousands of shekels. Don’t let this happen to you.

Step #9: Get a copy of your ketubah (Jewish marriage contract).

Remember that the ketubah is a binding document. If your marriage ends, then in certain scenarios the amount of money payable to the wife in the ketubah (the demei ketubah) may become due and payable. Before anybody starts any actions, it is important to know what that amount is. And you will need the ketubah for your divorce (GET) in the  Rabbinic court.

Step #10: If your spouse is having an affair, collect proof of infidelity.

Keep emails, WhatsApp or sms messages, pictures, recordings, hand written letters, receipts, anything that proves there has been infidelity.  It is true that the Supreme Court has said infidelity is not supposed to affect the division of assets. And it is also true that there are many cases where certain “proofs” aren’t allowed to be admitted into evidence. That being said, in the case of a suit over money payable to the wife pursuant to the Jewish marriage contract (GET), it is always relevant. And in many other cases it can affect whether the family court judge or dayanim (religious court judges) issue rulings at the lower or higher end of the scales that they are weighing.

It’s worth noting that the person who files a Motion to Settle Differences first, is the person who gets to decide which court (Family or Rabbinic) hears which issue in divorce litigation (like child custody and division of assets).

You can learn about the race for jurisdiction in this short video.

Remember that filing a Motion to Settle Differences does not mean you have started a divorce. It is just a preparatory stage required before anybody is legally allowed to file for divorce. However, if you are afraid that your spouse is going to file this motion first, then you should contact an experienced family law attorney right away.  If you’re thinking of divorcing your spouse in the next year or if you think your spouse may want to initiate divorce against you, prepare yourself by beginning to collect the information above so you can have the best financial outcome after your divorce.  Protect yourself and your family.
