In Arabic the name ‘baharat’ means ‘blend of spices’.  Baharat is a spice popular in the Middle Eastern kitchen, and you can make your own by following this simple recipe.

Baharat in the Middle Eastern kitchen has the same function as garam masala in the Indian kitchen.  With a smoky, sweet taste, Baharat is popular with meat, chicken, fish and rice.

Preparation Time

  • 4 tablespoons ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons ground coriander
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons ground cloves
  • 3 tablespoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 4 teaspoons ground nutmeg
  • 4 tablespoons paprika


Blend all ingredients together and store in an airtight container away from direct sunlight.
