Mandatory driving regulations and road safety tips for Israel.

Turn your headlights on.

Road safety requirement: In Israel, from November 1st when the winter months officially begin, it is mandatory for all drivers to turn their vehicle headlights on when driving on inter-city roads.

Bus drivers, taxi drivers and truck drivers must keep their headlights on city roads as well as inter-city roads.

This requirement remains in effect until March 31st.

Here are some basic safety precautions you can take to protect yourself on Israel's roads. Whether you are driving, cycling or walking, make wise and responsible road safety choices.

1.  Check local road travel reports with detailed information on delays and other traffic issues by using an app like 'Moovit' or 'Waze'.

2.  Plan your route and transport options before you leave home. To accommodate road works public transport is sometimes re-routed.

3.  Unscrupulous taxi drivers will take advantage of you if they catch on that you are not familiar with the area. Make sure you know the way wherever possible.  Use Google Maps or similar software to familiarize yourself with landmarks and the direction you should be traveling in.

4.  Familiarize yourself with local “road culture” and road regulations.

5.  Seasonal hazards like flash floods (common in the Negev) can wash your vehicle away.  Check the weather report.  If you need to drive on an unfamiliar road during a bad storm, make sure to carry a charged mobile phone in case of emergencies.

6.  Hitchhiking: only pick up soldiers from a designated 'Trampiada' - a pick-up and drop-off point designated for hitchhikers.  We recommend that women travelers refrain from hitchhiking.

7.  Be alert especially at intersections. Intersections and traffic circles can be confusing especially if in your country of origin, you traveled on the opposite side of the road.

8.  If the taxi or bus driver is driving recklessly you have the right to ask to get out.  Report them to the taxi or bus company.

9.  If you are driving a rental car, make sure you clearly understand the rental company's rules and regulations and especially where traffic fines and toll road charges are concerned.

10.  New immigrants, even if you are an experienced driver, and irrespective of new drivers license conversion procedures, we suggest you take a few driving lessons before driving on local roads on your own.

11.  Choose the safest form of transportation especially in areas close to or in the Green Line.  Tourists traveling to Gaza should take special care.

12.  Avoid night road, or low visibility travel if possible in areas where there might be unrest.

13.  Please make sure you wear glasses or contact lenses every time you drive if you are required to do so as per the results of your eye test at the time of getting or renewing your drivers license.

14.  However minor you think a car accident is, you must stop and failing to do so is an offense.  You are also obligated to swap details with the other driver.  Here are those details...
